Botulinum toxin is the most performed and famous aesthetic procedure in Brazil and around the world. “When applied correctly, botulinum toxin works by interrupting the action between the motor nerve and the muscle, paralyzing the muscles. In this way we eliminate wrinkles, since these are consequences of muscle contraction,” says plastic surgeon Beatriz Lassance, full member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery and Isaps (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery).
And it doesn’t end there, since nowadays the substance has countless other indications, whether in the treatment of acne, hyperhidrosis, rosacea, scars and even depression. However, before and after applying the toxin, some care is required to avoid complications.
To help you better understand what these precautions are, the specialist has explained each one.
Be wary of very low prices
As the demand for botulinum toxin injections increases, cheaper versions of this procedure are starting to appear which, although it may seem like a good deal at first glance, can cause serious complications, such as irritation, inflammatory reactions, allergies and infections.
“It is also essential to ensure that what will be applied has been diluted correctly, as most of these professionals who perform low-cost procedures over-dilute the substances that will be used. The product is in the form of a powder which must be appropriately diluted with sterile saline solution. We must respect the concentration of units per injected area. By diluting it a lot, it could also be cheaper, but the number of units per point will be lower, with less effect and duration,” says the surgeon.
Look for qualified professionals
It is essential to ensure that the intervention is carried out by a specialized professional, since, in addition to using products of dubious quality, many people who claim to carry out such interventions at a lower price are not even qualified.
“You need to check that the professional who will carry out the application is qualified, and must be a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, as lack of knowledge of anatomy can lead to paralysis of the wrong muscles, damage to nerves and blood vessels,” he warns the doctor.
Search, search hard
If in doubt, use the internet and social media to check whether the specialist you have chosen is truly qualified and experienced. Look for patients who have already seen this specialist to see what their experience was.
Ask questions
“You can and should ask your doctor numerous questions before committing to the procedure. Ask for information on the technique, the product, possible complications, pre- and post-surgery, and the results. Talk to the specialist. If this is the case, step away and process all the information before engaging in treatment. Only then will you feel truly confident in completing the procedure.”
Keep an open mind
The application of botulinum toxin is one of the best known procedures and also one of the most performed in doctors’ offices around the world. However, according to the plastic surgeon, there are countless other cosmetic procedures that can be performed that may be even better for your case, after all, botulinum toxin cannot solve all problems.
“Therefore, before deciding on botulinum toxin, discuss with your doctor what the treatment options are for the region and the change you wish to treat. Lasers, fillers, biostimulators, sutures, microneedling and even surgeries are just some of the aesthetic treatment options that exist today,” he recommends.
Slow down
Take a cautious attitude and do not go to the doctor’s office with the intention of applying large quantities of botulinum toxin at one time, as the results may be exaggerated.
“It is also important to be careful when injecting botulinum toxin preventively because, although the substance is capable of delaying the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, you could end up becoming dependent on its use. Therefore, in most cases, it is better to treat wrinkles with the toxin only after they appear”, adds the specialist.
Be careful with self-medication
It may sound tempting, but avoid taking painkillers before the procedure, as they can increase the risk of bruising.
“The pain caused by needle sticks during the operation is minimal and can be tolerated easily without any type of anesthetic or analgesic. But more sensitive patients can talk to the doctor who will perform the operation so that an anesthetic cream is applied to the skin before the injections,” underlines Beatriz.
Be patient
The results of botulinum toxin application generally take about five days to appear, but in some cases it can take up to two weeks to become fully visible. So, before returning to your doctor for further applications, relax and wait for the results to appear completely.

Do not exercise after the procedure
“Although the application of botulinum toxin does not require any recovery time, it is ideal for you to be careful after the procedure. You can return to your daily activities immediately after applying the substance, but it is important to wait at least 24 hours before carrying out any exercise or activity that requires great physical effort.
Do not hurry
Beatriz Lassance finally emphasizes that maintenance of the procedure should only be carried out every three or four months and never before. This is because the high frequency of applications can cause resistance to the product.
