How to accelerate hair growth and get long hair quickly

Caution: Vitamins, shampoos and products are not able to accelerate the normal speed of hair growth

Obtaining long hair is the dream of most people, who use the most diverse strategies to achieve this result quickly. But is it possible to accelerate the normal rate of hair growth? According to Lilian Brasileiro, doctor specialist in Dermatology and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, no.

“In general, hair grows about 1 cm per month. And, despite all the glamor of the cosmetics industry, there are no vitamins, shampoos or solutions that change the speed of hair growth and cause the strands to suddenly reach long lengths,” claims the doctor.

He explains that the speed of hair growth is genetically determined by the anagen phase, which is the anabolic phase of follicle growth. “The hair growth phase varies between two and seven years, depending on the patient’s genetics, which is why some people have extremely long hair while others have locks that don’t go past their shoulders,” she adds.

Pathologies slow the growth rate

It is important to highlight that there are various pathologies that reduce the growth phase of the follicles, causing their thinning and preventing the hair from growing correctly.

“If you have noticed a decrease in the growth rate of hair that used to grow normally or you have noticed that your strands are becoming thinner and thinner, with gaps appearing, you are probably experiencing a problem, such as baldness. At this point, yes, there are effective treatments to regulate the speed of hair growth and ensure that the hair develops correctly again. These treatments will be chosen on a case-by-case basis after evaluation and correct diagnosis,” says Lilian.

To help those in this situation, we have brought together a team of experts to list the main hair loss strategies currently available.

Home treatment

Your doctor may prescribe medications and supplements to promote hair growth, such as finasteride and dutasteride.

“These drugs block the action of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, responsible for the conversion of the hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone or DHT, which causes hair loss,” explains Cintia Guedes, dermatologist member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) and the Brazilian Association of Dermatology. Society of Dermatological Surgery (SBCD).

Also highlight topical medications with 5% minoxidil. “When applied to the scalp, the medicine increases blood circulation in the region, improving its oxygenation. Furthermore, it prolongs the anagen (growth) phase of the hair, which also tends to become thicker, stronger and healthier,” explains the dermatologist.

Oral supplements such as exsynutriment (marine collagen stabilized silicon) can also be used. “Silicon works as a stimulator of collagen production and restructuring the dermal architecture. The hair follicle nourished with silicon and soaked in collagen will promote an increase in the production of keratin, which strengthens the hair, preventing hair loss and providing greater resistance and elasticity”, underlines Cintia.

Regenerates AMT

Minimally invasive, Regenera AMT is a regenerative treatment, created with autologous micrografts of mesenchymal cells.

“In this technique, the doctor extracts healthy follicular cells from the patient’s neck. Then, they are placed in a machine that releases progenitor cells. These cells, which are like workers and multiply to stimulate hair growth, are applied to the region where the patient needs hair to grow,” explains Lilian Brasileiro.

She emphasizes that the treatment is not a hair implant. “Regenera AMT stimulates and thickens the hair where there is a follicle, while the implant positions the hair where there is no longer a follicle,” adds the specialist.

The procedure is indicated for baldness, both male and female, and is performed in an outpatient clinic under local anesthesia. “Sessions last an hour on average. I recommend one or two sessions a year, with results observed between six and nine months,” says the doctor.

Megaderme Duo

MegaDerme Duo is a microneedling radiofrequency system that ensures accelerated growth and thickens hair, improving hair loss.

“The equipment is equipped with extremely fine microneedles that will act at the level of the hair bulb, emitting extremely low radiofrequency energy to stimulate without atrophy,” explains dermatologist Abdo Salomão Jr., member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

“In addition, the microneedles open channels that allow drugs to be applied much deeper into the skin, also stimulating cell differentiation, which helps thicken hair,” says the doctor.

During the session the patient feels slight pain, less than that of a procedure with rollers, since the needles are extremely thin. «And the diagonal arrangement ensures that the needles are distant from each other, preventing the concentration of pain in a single point», adds the dermatologist.

PDRN

Applied to the scalp through drug delivery, which opens channels that allow much deeper penetration into the region, PDRN is a substance with regenerative properties composed of a series of bioactive molecules extracted from salmon sperm DNA.

“If used on the scalp, PDRN, thanks to its regenerating action, is able to stimulate cell proliferation in the hair bulb, more precisely in the ‘swelling’ of the hair follicles, thus accelerating the growth of the hair, which also becomes stronger and thick. and healthy”, explains Danilo S. Talarico, doctor in Medical Trichology and Clinical and Surgical Dermatology

He states that PDRN is a very safe and well tolerated substance, as salmon DNA is similar to human DNA. “In addition, during the extraction and purification process of the substance, peptides and proteins that can cause immune reactions are removed, making it safe even for patients allergic to seafood,” adds the doctor.

Keravive HydraFacial

The big advantage of this outpatient treatment is that it provides a deep cleansing and exfoliation that the patient cannot achieve with regular washing at home, according to Lilian Brasileiro.

“The procedure can also help treat hair loss and can stimulate the growth of follicles if they are resting. It is worth remembering that a number of factors influence the success of therapy, such as the type of alopecia and the patient’s individual response. But, in general, improving the health of the scalp, with greater nutritional support and an increase in the microcirculation process, can contribute to the treatment of different types of hair loss,” he says.

Lilian explains that, initially during the treatment, HydraFacial Keravive’s exclusive Vortex Fusion technology generates a vortex effect capable of promoting deep cleansing and exfoliation and improving microcirculation and blood flow in the scalp during the application of the Beta HD-Clear solution.

“In addition to contributing to this cleansing and exfoliation process, this solution has antibacterial, hydrating, exfoliating and calming properties as it contains active ingredients such as salicylic acid and honey and flower extracts, which make it extremely beneficial for the health of the scalp” , the specialist details.

Hair transplant

As a last resort, when hair loss is already very advanced, the best results are obtained with hair transplantation, which, instead of normalizing hair growth, consists of removing the follicular units (hair roots) from the patient in a region, called donor. area, to be transplanted into another.

According to Diogo Coimbra, a plastic surgeon specializing in hair transplantation and member of the Brazilian Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAPS), the procedure can be performed using two techniques: FUT (acronym in English for Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) . Follicular, in English).

“The difference between the techniques lies in the way the follicular units are harvested. In FUE the follicular units are extracted individually through microincisions, while in FUT a strip of skin is removed from the donor area, generally from the lateral and posterior regions of the head,” he says.

Hair transplant results, according to BAPS, are extremely natural, as long as the procedure is performed by a properly certified professional with extensive experience.

“After the transplant, which is carried out follicle by follicle following the natural angle and distribution of the hair, the hair grows back with the same color, texture and growth rate as the area from which it was removed. There is no risk of rejection, since the follicular units used come from the patient himself, and the results are permanent, since the procedure is performed with follicular units that do not have the genetics of baldness,” says Diogo.

One year after the surgery, the patient will see the final result. But BAPS emphasizes that the patient should consult an experienced plastic surgeon, since adequate evaluation and the practitioner’s technique are factors that directly affect the outcome of the procedure.

If you have any doubts about the specialist, BAPS suggests checking whether the doctor has an RQE, which is the qualification certificate of the specialty, and looking for other people who have already undergone procedures with the professional to check what the experience has been and the results.
