And those who are married, or at least share a bed with their partner every night, tend to take the lead when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. At least that’s what a study published in the scientific journal Sleep and conducted by the University of Arizona in the United States found.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed the sleep of 1,007 working-age adults in the state of Pennsylvania. Among those who have maintained the habit of sleeping most nights with their partner, it has been observed that there are fewer cases of insomnia, sleep apnea and fatigue in general, compared to those who sleep alone. Additionally, bedtime companionship was also associated with fewer cases of anxiety and depression.

On the other hand, sleeping next to children or other relatives showed a worsening of sleep quality. According to the researchers, this finding could indicate that married people have more social support and relationship satisfaction. While those who sleep alone tend to have less satisfaction for life.

The study is part of the SHADES (Sleep and Health Activity, Diet, Environment and Socialization) program.
