Offering a playful and engaging experience to children’s interests is essential when designing or renovating a little one’s room. But for the architect Aline Zanoniin the development of this environment it is necessary to take into account some points, such as safety, the stimulation of autonomy, creativity and the child’s own personality.
“One of the favorite concepts among parents and interior professionals is the Montessori style. It follows the premises of a playful, functional and encouraging space, where the child has the possibility of being in a controlled space, without the need for healthcare workers to look at him”, explains Zanoni.
Low-height beds and shelves, as well as furniture with rounded corners that are easy to clean and maintain, are among the main recommendations when choosing furniture and decorative objects for the children’s bedroom.
“Montessori decoration can be adopted from early childhood until the child makes the decision, on his own, to change the style of the bedroom. The fabric hut or the wooden house are safe styles that tend to be very popular with most people “The theme of the room can be customized according to the child’s interests and can be printed on the bedding, pillows or even on a comic hanging in the room,” he points out.

Choose a theme
“In addition to being the starting point for designing the children’s bedroom, choosing a theme that satisfies his interests helps the little one connect with his space. He will feel immersed in the world of his imagination, which will help him awaken playfulness and creativity. The defined theme also directly influences the making of other decisions regarding the project, such as the choice of color palette, furniture and even accessories”, explains Zanoni.
Colors
“The color palette of your children’s project will depend on the theme you choose for the space, but if your child is young, placing points of interest in primary colors, such as blue, red and yellow, can help him identify each one. If you don’t want one space with such eye-catching colors, choose objects that can incorporate these tones into the design, such as cushions, rugs, paintings, furniture and baskets,” he adds.
Functional furniture
“In the Montessori method the suggestion is to opt for small-sized furniture, thus avoiding the feeling of vulnerability in children, who generally feel uncomfortable with large objects. Another point that must be taken into account is the material of these furniture, which must be easy to clean and maintain, since most children’s games involve some kind of dirt,” reflects Aline.
Study area
“If the child is already of school age, create a comfortable and well-lit study area for him, complete with table, chair and shelves. If the space of the room is too small to include bed + wardrobe + study area, opt for a carpentry customized which includes a 2 in 1 project with bed + attached desk”, suggests the architect.
Safety
“When we talk about a children’s project, one of the most important factors is safety. Make sure the child’s room is safe, avoiding furniture with sharp edges and pieces that could pose risks. Prefer rounded furniture. Avoid exposed cables and sockets, ” This is crucial, so invest in socket protectors. When choosing paint for the room, you must also give priority to non-toxic ones,” reminds Aline.
