What is recommended? First, avoid sexual intercourse during the time the person has active lesions. Outside of this period, the risk of transmission is much, much lower.
Furthermore, if you use a condom during sexual intercourse, you also significantly reduce this risk of transmission. In any case, outside of the acute phase and with herpes under control, the risk of transmitting it to someone else is very low.
