Abdominoplasty: Understanding the different purposes of the procedure

Abdominoplasty promotes better body contouring, but not all procedures are created equal. Know the purpose of each

Brazil is the second country in the world for the number of plastic surgery procedures performed, behind only the United States. Among the most commonly performed operations, abdominoplasty is becoming increasingly known and appreciated, especially for its ability to accentuate the contours of the body.

OR Doctor Vitor Nunes, plastic surgeon and specialist member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), explains that abdominoplasty is a plastic surgery operation of the umbilical region, where excess skin and sagging skin in the region are corrected. “If necessary, the operation brings the muscles closer if they are distant, correcting the diastasis and also hernias, if present,” he says.

According to the doctor, surgery is recommended when there is sagging in the region, excess skin or many stretch marks below the navel. These signs, in fact, generally appear after significant weight loss, multiple pregnancies or with the aging process and decline in hormones.

What are the main types of abdominoplasty?

There are different types of abdominoplasty, says the plastic surgeon. According to him, each type will depend on the patient’s complaint, goals, intensity of relaxation and location.

“There is the classic abdominoplasty, the mini-abdominoplasty, the reverse abdominoplasty, the extended abdominoplasty, the anchor abdominoplasty and the circumferential abdominoplasty. What differentiates them is the positioning of the scar,” he explains.

If, for example, in addition to sagging in the abdominal region, the patient also has significant sagging in the lateral region, hips and waist area, classic abdominoplasty alone is not capable of producing results.

“Therefore, in this case an extended abdominoplasty is necessary, where the scar is widened laterally, treating the flank region, a flankoplasty, and this combination of the two surgeries is called extended abdominoplasty,” explains Vitor.

Precautions

There are several precautions to take before and after abdominoplasty surgery. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor for good advice. For example, you can pay attention to scar care, avoid the sun, avoid physical exertion too early, be careful when sleeping, walking and bending. Sometimes it is necessary to perform postoperative drainage. It is also important to pay attention to the condiments.

“When choosing a specialist, check his training and ask for advice to clarify any doubts. Once all expectations have been aligned, operating in a hospital environment is essential”, underlines Vitor Nunes.
