Black people are the biggest victims of medical errors, health body says

Highlight is the result of the Çarê-Ieps bulletin and draws attention to racial inequalities in Brazil

In almost all of Brazil, blacks are in greater numbers in cases of accidents or adverse incidents during medical procedures. The only exception is the Southern region, according to the Çarê-Ieps Bulletin n.3.

Titled “Accidents and adverse incidents during hospitalization, according to race/color”, the document was prepared by the Çarê Chair – Ieps, on the initiative of the Institute for Health Policy Studies.

To produce the study, the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) was considered, which defines adverse events as hospital conditions acquired undesirably and involuntarily during the hospitalization period. This includes everything from accidental cuts to punctures and foreign bodies left in the patient’s body during procedures.

The research considers data extracted between 2012 and 2021, when a total of 66,496 incidents of this type were recorded. According to the body, the odds of hospitalization due to an accident or medical incident during the period were six times higher among blacks in the North and Northeast regions. In the Central-West the difference was three times greater, while in the Brazilian South-East it was 65% greater. In the South, the only region where the trend has reversed, whites are 38% more likely to suffer from these causes.

With the dissemination of the data, Rony Coelho, Ieps researcher and member of the Çarê-Ieps Chair, highlights that the scenario shows how the black population is more exposed to situations of negligence or medical error.

“The data confirms, once again, the impacts of racial inequalities on the health of the black population; that even when they obtain medical care, they are more exposed to risk situations, such as accidental cuts, puncture wounds or dosing errors and other adversities related to the provision of care that may occur during the hospitalization period”.

The research also draws attention to the decline in hospital admissions resulting from accidents and medical incidents. This reduction began in 2016 and continued until 2021 (last analyzed), when the number of registrations was 4,697.

Ieps suggests that this trend is a reflection of improvements in the management and prevention of these situations. But it also doesn’t rule out the possibility of a larger volume of underreported cases.
