The follower says her hands are hurt, but she can’t control herself
Doctor, I have a terrible cleaning habit. I start washing my hands and can’t stop. Sometimes I spend 30, 40 minutes in a process that seems to have no end, it’s almost a ritual. I don’t know what I do anymore. My hands hurt, my mother keeps complaining that I spend a lot of time in the bathroom and I get very, very anxious. What can I do?
From what you say, you may be facing a problem we call obsessive-compulsive disorder. In this situation, the person feels a lot of anguish, anxiety, thinks that something bad will happen or that he will get infected if he does not follow a certain pattern of behavior. And then the person goes into a ritual, like the one you describe, of washing their hands non-stop, in an attempt to relieve this distress or to prevent something bad from happening.
There is no logical relationship, because there is no point in washing your hands to prevent something bad from happening to you or your family, but it remains in your head. So what do I think you can do? If you realize that this is a pattern that bothers you and has been occurring for a long time, it is worth seeking help from a specialist. Talk to your parents, explain that you are struggling and that you need to talk to a mental health professional.
It is important to know that there is a way, there is a cure, a therapy, a medicine… there are different possibilities. The important thing is that you take the first step.
