José Nilton Cardozo, 65, faced a court battle to be entitled to treatment. Now he finds himself facing a new drama with the growth of the tumor

Three months after removing a giant jelly-like tumor from his face, a 65-year-old man was hospitalized again in Natal (RN) after the tumor grew back, causing intense pain. José Nilton Cardozo was hospitalized on Monday 30th at the Santa Catarina Hospital, in the Northern Zone of the capital of Rio Grande do Norte.

Family members reported InterTV Cabugiaffiliate of Rede Globo in Rio Grande do Norte, which the tumor grew to a size close to its original size and José Nilton had to be hospitalized to treat the pain and carry out new tests.

Currently, according to his family, his health condition is considered delicate but stable. She remains in isolation and cannot receive visitors.

The medical team is waiting for tests to be carried out to establish whether the tumor, which was benign, has evolved into an anaplastic meningioma, considered malignant. Doctors also evaluate the need for radiotherapy sessions during treatment.

Legal battle and first surgery

At the time of the first surgery, the elderly man received 18 doses of morphine in one day to treat the pain caused by the facial tumor. He underwent surgery on August 12, after a five-month court battle.

The operation lasted 4 hours and was carried out in Natal, at the Policlínica, a partner hospital of the Rio Grande do Norte Cancer League. Doctors managed to remove much of the tumor covering the carpenter’s face, leaving only a small portion that was located in a delicate region behind the aorta.

“The surgery was a success. The doctor was surprised, because it was simpler than he imagined. He believed that the tumor had already hardened, but it was gelatinous, so everything went smoothly,” added Mirnarí, who is a lawyer and was responsible for taking legal action against the State and obtaining the amount of R$60,000 to cover hospital expenses.

The operation was delayed because the carpenter had to wait months to perform embolization, a procedure that cuts off blood flow to the tumor. The material that carried out this small intervention was missing in Rio Grande do Norte.

José, therefore, had to appeal to the court to speed up the purchase of this material. After the operation the patient was transferred to the Polyclinic, where the tumor was removed.
