Fernanda Lacerda says she ate the placenta for the sake of her son: ‘I decided to face it’

The influencer asked her doula for advice before making a decision

Fernanda Lacerda, former Mendicante of the program “Pânico”, gave birth to Gabriel, her first child, on October 28th. The little girl came into the world healthy and one detail caught the attention of social media: the influencer revealed that she had ingested the placenta after giving birth.

In an exclusive interview with Earth you, Fernanda explains that the act of ingesting the placenta is called placentophagy and has been around for a few years. “It is more common in the United States. In Brazil, like many things, it is still controversial. I had already followed some women who ingested it, like Fernanda Lima, for example, and I asked my doula, Gil Ramos,” she says .

Gabriel’s mother said she heard from the doula that there is no scientific evidence on the benefits that consumption can bring, but that the women she monitors and consumes report increased milk production and a lighter postpartum period.

“It was all I needed at the time. Since there is no harm in it, I decided to take it, thinking precisely of the possible benefits for me and my baby,” she added.

According to Dr. Flavia do Vale, obstetrician-gynecologist at the Clínica Plena Ultrasonografia and professor at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), all the nutrients acquired by the baby developing in the mother’s womb are transferred through the placenta.

“It is composed of fetal and maternal tissues. On the fetal side, they are formed by fetal cells organized into chorionic villi, which contain fetal blood vessels. On the maternal side, there are tissues that provide support and nutrients for the growth and development of the fetus,” explains.

Difficulty breastfeeding

Fernanda explains that she and her son go through a period of adaptation and that they face calmer days and more challenging ones.

“But everything we are experiencing is part of the process. For now the most difficult thing is breastfeeding. He breastfeeds very well, but while he was in the colostrum he hurt my nipple, so it became very sensitive. The left breast it was fine, it hurt, so I started breastfeeding without taking turns and I was only breastfeeding from the right breast, the next day, when the milk came from the left breast, it was completely hard”, she says.

After that, she had lots of massages to help the milk melt and milking improved a lot, but she admits she cried a lot thinking she wouldn’t be able to breastfeed.

“I’m still recovering from the fissures. The laser helps a lot with this discomfort and since it is anti-inflammatory now it is almost zero. Then it affected my psychology a lot because I thought for a moment that I would no longer be able to breastfeed. But thank God, if this happens, I want to be able to breastfeed exclusively with breast milk on demand”, he concludes.

“And now my nipples are healing, I can breastfeed a lot. He’s a little calf, he always wants a breast,” the first-time mom is proud.
