A mother has gone viral after using a screwdriver to extract her daughter’s baby tooth. The dentist contraindicates the method and teaches the most appropriate way
A mother has gone viral after using a screwdriver to extract her daughter’s baby tooth. The unusual method worked and, even after a bit of fright, little Ana Júlia, 8 years old, appeared smiling with the “window” and the tooth in her hand.
Although everything went well, it is worth emphasizing that the technique should not be reproduced. This is because the screwdriver is a dangerous tool and can injure anyone involved. Furthermore, the action may pose risks to the child’s oral health.
“We dentists discourage the extraction of milk teeth in this format. By extracting the tooth too abruptly and with dirty objects, we can possibly expose the child to unnecessary risks,” warns Dr. Anna Karolina Ximenes, dentist at IGM Pediatric Dentistry.
Among the main risks the professional cites for example:
- Infection due to improper handling and dirt of these objects used in action;
- Retention of small pieces of the root, as this is a very sudden movement;
- Damage to the gum tissue, with increased bleeding and pain;
- Emotional trauma, in cases of failure, as there is an increase in anxiety and stress in the child if it is necessary to repeat the attempt to extract the baby tooth.
Is there a right way to extract a baby tooth?
The dentist emphasizes that the extraction of baby teeth generally represents a moment of great joy for parents and the child, as a new phase begins. Therefore, it is worth emphasizing that there is a more appropriate way to do it at home. “If the tooth is very soft, we can use gauze or a clean cloth, make gentle circular movements until it comes away from the gum”, advises the professional.
Starting from the age of six, the transition from baby teeth to permanent teeth is expected. According to Anna Karolina, the ideal time to carry out the extraction is when the tooth is so soft that it gives the impression that it will come out “on its own”.
No matter how “loose” it is, it is normal for some light bleeding to occur. It is therefore advisable to ask the child to bite on gauze for a few minutes, as well as consuming very cold liquids or foods.
In cases where parents or children encounter difficulties in extracting a baby tooth, it is always necessary to seek professional help. This is the case, for example, of some situations of late retention of baby teeth, where there is no complete resorption of the root of the deciduous tooth and it remains retained in the mouth.
“As a result, the permanent tooth deviates its path and erupts in an ectopic position (normally behind the baby tooth) and, therefore, this baby tooth does not soften adequately, which makes its extraction recommended by a professional,” he says the dentist.
