The project offers free treatment with hormone implants and aims to provide quality of life to women suffering from PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder)
It took six years to find an answer. From doctor to doctor, from gynecologist to psychiatrist. Different treatments and no solution to the problem. Irritability, lack of libido, little contact with other people, extreme tiredness and a lot of pain. This is reported by Bruna Martins de Almeida, a 39-year-old cook, who was diagnosed with PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) three years ago and who has since sought adequate treatment in the hope of resuming life with her 14-year-old daughter and her husband . “I spent many years looking for a diagnosis, a cure. The doctors looked at the tests and said everything was normal. I also went to psychiatry, I can’t leave the house, my daughter can’t have much contact with me, I try a lot of irritation, I have an anxiety attack, I can’t have my period because I feel very bad pain and I have to take morphine. I have a short period of joy that lasts five days. I tried all kinds of treatments and there was also a doctor who told me that my tests were normal and I thought that the problem was that I didn’t like my husband and I had to think about separation”, says Bruna, who is one of the patients selected by La Vie Legacy Labs volunteer project, as part of the course of basic prescription and procedures with hormonal implants. Last August, Bruna and 12 other patients obtained, after having undergone tests and analyzes by a multidisciplinary team and doctors, the possibility of receiving treatment through hormonal implants. They receive the implants free of charge and are monitored by specialists throughout the period of use. The procedure, received free of charge, costs on average R$8,000 per year. Like Bruna, Thame Ferraz Porto, a 42-year-old public employee, was also selected. “I found out that I had PMDD, because for the past few years I had been having depressive symptoms, irritability, tiredness, I had consultations with psychiatric doctors. These symptoms were temporary and I noticed that they worsened in the premenstrual period. It was then that I reported this to one of psychiatrists I consulted and he told me to look for a gynecologist who specializes in hormone replacement therapy. That’s when I found out that La Vie Legacy Labs was looking for volunteers to use the implants. I signed up in hopes of changing my life. And now I feel that I can be even happier. Life is wonderful, but there were boring moments. Now it will be much better,” says Thame. “Today is a new beginning, a blank page. I will be a woman again. I will look in the mirror and renew my self-esteem, I will accompany my daughter, I will be a wife. I want to be a wife. And it is good that, despite all these problems , insisted on being my husband”, adds Bruna. Juliane Orrigo Jardim, 45, suffers from endometriosis. I had already undergone four surgeries. “The implants were the only way I was able to find balance. I stopped bleeding. I have been using them since 2015. For me it is important, because we know how difficult it is, especially for treatment, that the methods offered do not are practical “I used all the other existing methods and the only thing that really controlled me was the use of the implant. This laboratory action is extremely important. It gives access to benefit those suffering from illnesses like mine. I have been to several doctors and for me this project is fundamental, it is a treatment that not everyone has access to and moreover I can share it with doctors so that they have patient reports and can reach other people like me, only those who have the disease , those who go through the situation really know what they feel.” ©pixelshot via Canva.com This is the second edition of the basic course on prescription and procedures with hormone implants held by La vie Legacy Labs in 2023. Gynecologists Jorge Valente and Juliana Paola de Melhado and Lima are mentors of the program and have interviewed each candidate for the implant individually. The course will end in December. In it, doctors receive all the information on hormone implants, training for the practice professionals and all the necessary information. “It’s really nice to have this experience, solve clinical cases and talk to patients to understand each person’s pain and try, within the hormonal implants, to solve the problem. It’s the proliferation of treatments for the person. She (the patient ) comes here knowing, the desire for help and this welcome is very important”, said the gynecologist Juliana. The selection of patients eligible to receive hormone implants is based on clinical evaluation, case study and patient symptom reports. Before the start of the courses and program, the La Vie Legacy Labs laboratory, located in Bahia, widely advertises the possibility of the procedures through social media and also through the founder Manuela Coutinho. According to Manuela Coutinho, founder of La Vie Legacy, more than training professionals in the use of hormone implants, the course aims to provide quality of life to the participating women. “We go far beyond the product. We work together with doctors, always focusing on the patient. Our goal is to help doctors help their patients,” she says.
PMDD – Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or popularly called Super PMS, is the most severe form of premenstrual tension. It causes symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, derogatory thoughts, fatigue, lack of sleep, swelling of the body and others. It is linked to hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle. Three to eight percent of women are affected by the disorder. Since 2022, the International Code of Diseases (ICD) has begun to classify PMDD as a disease.
The lab
Based in Salvador, Bahia, La Vie Legacy Labs was founded by Manuela Coutinho, granddaughter of hormone implant pioneer Elsimar Coutinho. The laboratory was born with the responsibility of consolidating its products as the largest reference in Brazil in hormonal therapies and treatments aimed at reproductive health and longevity. The implants are intended for contraception or the treatment of estrogen-dependent pathologies, such as endometriosis. When Manuela’s grandfather passed away due to Covid-19 in 2020, the transfer of management led to changes in the company structure that directly clashed with the values of the entrepreneur who chose to leave the company and start again creating your own brand. From this decision MCLegacy Eduh and La Vie Legacy Labs were born. MCLegacy Eduh is a kind of extension of La Vie Legacy Labs. He is responsible for tutoring and courses for doctors, from basic to advanced; as well as the training of the teams of these professionals, focused on procedures with hormonal implants. In this way, companies remain united in the ideal of strengthening relationships with the medical profession and deepening specialist knowledge, combined with the conscious, responsible and effective diffusion of their products, in order to broaden the quality of life and health of women . Vie Legacy Labs currently has 20 direct collaborators and Manuela’s sister as a partner. The expectation is that by the end of the year the number of professionals hired by the company will double.
