The international model recalls the risks she took by taking slimming drugs without consulting her doctor. The doctor issues an alert
In Brazil, around 9 out of 10 people take medicines without a prescription, as indicated by the self-medication survey (2022) of the Institute of Research and Specialization for the Pharmaceutical Market (ICTQ). The study showed that the habit is extremely common among Brazilians. However, experts warn about the health risks of self-medicating.
Even though it seems like a simple and effective solution, self-medicating tends to be dangerous. This is because it can prolong recovery in easy-to-treat cases and mask more serious illnesses that require a medical diagnosis.
According to neurosurgeon Dr. Guilherme Rossoni, even taking medications alone can be life-threatening. “Self-medication is extremely dangerous and even deadly. This is because, in addition to consequences such as intoxication and the ineffectiveness of correct treatment, the person who self-medicates runs the risk of death,” he warns.
The specialist invites us to pay more attention to antibiotics, medicines necessary to fight infections. The neurosurgeon highlights that its incorrect use can worsen the patient’s condition.
Remedies for losing weight – sibutramine
According to the doctor, the main cause of self-medication is easy access to research and purchase drugs. In addition, obviously, to the patient’s convenience of “solving it on their own” without needing to go to hospital or a specialist. The phenomenon is even more common in slimming treatments.
The international model Live By Domenico is an example of this. At the beginning of his career he says he succumbed to aesthetic pressure and resorted to over-the-counter drugs, putting his health at risk. When she gained weight after a business trip, the model resorted to sibutramine without a proper medical prescription.
Sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate is an oral medication indicated for the treatment of obesity, as part of a weight management program. It should only be used under medical supervision, as indicated in the package leaflet.
It is worth noting that the medicine is contraindicated for smokers; patients with body mass index (BMI) less than 30 kg/m2; with a history of eating disorders; subjected to pharmacological treatments for weight loss and/or psychiatric disorders; and also for patients suffering from a variety of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension.
Among the side effects, the patient may experience constipation (reduced frequency of bowel movements), dry mouth, insomnia, tachycardia, palpitations, increased blood pressure, nausea, and delirium or dizziness, among other symptoms.
Pressure from the fashion world
Today the model highlights the importance of rethinking the aesthetic standards imposed by the fashion industry and encourages other professionals to prioritize health over unhealthy pressures.
Vivi Di Domenico shares her experience as a wake-up call on the need for an open dialogue on mental and physical health within the world of fashion, aiming for a more conscious and responsible approach to the well-being of industry professionals.
