Toothbrushes are individual items that should only be used by one person, but there are people who believe that sharing the item is no big deal, which is a big mistake.

Toothbrushes are essential tools for oral health, as they are responsible for mechanically cleaning the structures of the oral cavity, including the teeth, gums and tongue. The mouth is an area extremely colonized by bacteria, but they are only yours. In the case of kissing, for example, we transmit these microorganisms to another person. When you change the brushes, the situation gets even worse.

Paulo Zahr, dentist, founder and president of Grupo OdontoCompany, warns of the main risks.

“When using toothbrushes, even more bacteria are exchanged, especially potentially pathogenic ones, i.e. those that cause diseases. The same goes for viruses and other sources of contamination, such as the flu, colds, Covid-19 and even cold sores,” warns the dentist.

Transfer of the problem

Due to these bacteria, which are present in the toothbrush bristles, it is possible for people to pass on problems such as periodontitis or gingivitis to each other. The care of the brush is also a point of attention, as it must be kept clean and replaced with a new one within a maximum of three months. This way you ensure that the bacteria present in the bristles do not become harmful to your oral health.

The protective covers also prevent the bristles from coming into contact with the environment, but it is worth remembering that this box must be frequently sanitized and dried properly, to prevent the bristles from sticking to the fungi.
