Learn about the causes and symptoms of psychological pregnancy in dogs

The vet explains how to treat this disease which mainly affects non-neutered females

Popularly known as psychological pregnancy, pseudocyesis is a problem that primarily affects unneutered dogs. The disease is characterized by physical signs of pregnancy and maternal behaviors, which occur even without the female being pregnant.

It can happen due to a hormonal disorder in the animal. Veterinarian Andréia Massuia explains that, after the heat, there is a fall of progesterone levels and, consequently, increases prolactin (the hormone responsible for the production of the mammary glands during pregnancy), as well as other symptoms.

Symptoms and risks

According to Andréia Massuia the main physical signs of a psychological pregnancy are:

  • Swelling of the abdomen and breasts;
  • Milk production;
  • Lack of appetite;
  • Nausea;
  • Aggression;
  • Depression;
  • Adoption of objects such as puppies.

The vet explains that the symptoms last up to two weeks and can lead to other diseases, such as mastitis (infection of the mammary region). Therefore, it is essential that the owner seeks professional help as soon as he identifies any signs of the disease.

Treatment for the problem

According to Andréia Massuia, the treatment of psychological pregnancy must prevent stimulation of the mammary glands. To do this requires the use of an Elizabethan collar or surgical clothing, as well as the administration of medicines which inhibit the production of prolactin. “The treatment lasts an average of a week, and the owner must make the female comfortable with her little imagination, to prevent her from becoming more anxious and aggressive”, adds the veterinarian.

Psychological prevention of pregnancy

The only way to prevent this type of problem, according to veterinarian Andréia Massuia, is through castration. However, the professional points out that neutered dogs can also develop the disease, but the chances are lower.
