Samonella kills two people and 99 become ill in the USA

According to a government agency, cases have been registered in 32 states of the country and the number of sick people is probably much higher than that recorded

A salmonella outbreak in the United States has killed two people and sickened at least 99, according to reports. “food safety alert” published last Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

According to American government agency, The outbreak is linked to melons of the Caribe variety, also called Harper cantaloupe melons. Both deaths were reported in Minnesota.

In total, 32 states had recorded cases of people suffering from salmonella. Most in Arizona, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as Minnesota. Of the 99 patients, 45 had to be hospitalized.

“The actual number of people sickened in this outbreak is likely much higher than the reported number, and the outbreak may not be limited to states with known illnesses.”underlines the CDC.

“This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for salmonella. Additionally, recent illnesses may go unreported as it typically takes three to four weeks to determine whether a sick person is part of an outbreak,” highlights the CDC.

Health measures

Several melons (whole and already cut) were collected from markets across the country. The agency asks that responsible companies not sell or serve these fruits or products made with them. They are also asked to wash and sanitize objects and surfaces that have been in contact with the harvested melons.

According to the CDC, most people infected with salmonella experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, symptoms that usually begin 6 hours to 6 days after ingesting the bacteria. Most people recover, without needing treatment, after 4-7 days.

Children under 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems may experience more severe illness that requires medical treatment or hospitalization.
