Lipedema: how to treat excess fat located on the legs

It is another type of disease for which there is currently no cure.

Lipedema is a chronic disease recognized by excess fat in the buttocks, legs, ankles and arms. Although it usually affects adult women, there are reports of men being affected. Its exact cause is still unknown, but at least there are treatments and in this sense physical exercise is an alternative to controlling lipedema.

The impact of exercise on lipedema

“Lipedema can be modified with physical activity, an anti-inflammatory diet, lymphatic drainage, medications, the use of compression stockings and even surgery to remove diseased adipose tissue. Changing lifestyle habits in search of a state less intense inflammatory process is decisive to contain the evolution of lipedema”, states the vascular surgeon Dr. Aline Lamaita.

Another point mentioned by the doctor is the importance of treating other associated pathologies such as varicose veins and hypertension to avoid complications. It is also emphasized that it is not possible to establish a diagnosis, that is, a person must consult a specialist.

“However, the most important thing is to consult a specialized doctor. Only he will be able to diagnose the problem and indicate the best treatment for each case”, emphasizes the professional.

Other curiosities about lipedema

Lymphedema causes changes in the lymphatic system, which lead to fluid accumulation in the affected limb. Lipedemas are always symmetrical and the symptoms include painful sensations to touch, increased frequency of spontaneous hematomas and tendency to fluid accumulation.

“It is not uncommon for people with lipedema to be surprised when they undergo lymphatic drainage or a relaxing massage. This experience, which should be pleasant, usually accompanies pain and sensitivity to touch,” adds Dr. Aline.

Furthermore, the doctor explains that lipedema evolves throughout life and that the increase in adipose tissue occurs due to weight gain, inadequate nutrition and hormonal disorders.

“But the big problem is that this fat is unhealthy. And it is often not reduced with basic habits such as diet and physical activity, professional help is needed,” concludes Dr. Aline Lamaita.
