Have you heard that sentence before?
Several times when I came across this expression, I couldn’t understand why, after all, I was always very clear that I would only do things if they turned out to be perfect and if I could do my best.

But then life happens! So simple! We find that this demand for perfection can be very limiting and involve a lot of suffering. Once we charge so much to make things perfect, sometimes we stop doing them and give up, simply because it’s not what we imagined.
Have you been through this? I receive many patients in the clinic with the same request and I notice a clear pain in their routine, as sometimes they cannot perform basic tasks because they would like to do it in the best possible way and this is not part of their routine.
I’ll give you 2 examples: when I hear someone say that they want to get into the habit of practicing physical activity every day and then that person tells me that they gave up because they couldn’t keep up, I always wonder “but what were your expectations at the regard?” and usually the answer is “I wanted to train 1 hour a day, 5 times a week”. What if that person starts with just 20 minutes a day ?! It may not be the ideal target yet, but it will be something !!! Since this relentless pursuit of perfection can also hinder the evolution and achievement of goals!
I’ll give you another example that is 100% correlated with expectations versus reality. Two months ago I had to take the last Spanish placement test and my teacher tried to program more than 5 times with me, however, during that time everything in my life happened and I had to cancel it. In my mind it was simply impossible for me to show up for an exam without having devoted myself fully to studying for her, but I didn’t have time and it wasn’t taking off. Until one day, in class, I was surprised by the test and, surprisingly, I passed it without having studied.
I learned a lot from this situation, basically I saw that it was useless for me to always want to do everything perfect, sometimes it was better to just do it! I have also learned to trust myself and my potential even more and I have learned that it will never be the ideal scenario, the only right time is today!
So if you happen to put off something because you want to feel perfectly ready, I’ll tell you one thing: just go! Done is better than perfect!
I truly hope you can break free from these standards of perfection that can be limiting in your life and that you can move forward with your goals and goals every day! Let’s take this journey together!
