Another topic checked by Sport Life to avoid the spread of false myths about this supplement

Whey Protein is a supplement based on proteins extracted from milk, meaning it is the drink that helps you reach your daily protein goal. Its main benefits include increasing muscle mass, decreasing body fat and muscle recovery after exercise. Despite this, its consumption is still surrounded by doubts, for example: does whey protein affect the liver?

Whey protein does not affect the liver!

“We do not yet have scientific evidence to suggest that whey protein use may be harmful to the liver. However, too much protein in the diet can overburden the functioning of the liver and kidneys. Therefore, consumption should be carried out under professional guidance”, guides the nutritionist of the Specialized Center for Obesity and Diabetes of the Alemão Oswaldo Cruz Hospital Bruna Lima in an exclusive interview for Sport Life.

Likewise, there is no prohibition on consuming whey protein for a person who has liver problems. This fact denotes the importance of consultation with a specialist for safe ingestion.

“Before starting integration, it is important that the person contacts a nutritionist to carry out a complete evaluation, with biochemical tests, and thus understand what to integrate”, underlines Bruna.

It therefore becomes impractical to indicate a daily or weekly consumption for a subject since it must be taken into account whether he is an amateur athlete, a high-performance athlete or someone who usually does not train with intensity and frequency.

“The daily dose varies from individual to individual. There is no contraindication to whey protein. It can be used by anyone, young or old, but it is necessary to be careful with people who already have kidney problems, since in this case the proteins need to be adjusted.”, explains the professional.

Which supplement overloads the liver?

“Vitamin A, which can cause liver cirrhosis. Some B complex vitamins can also damage the liver. Vitamin E can cause hemorrhagic stroke, and vitamin C consumed in high doses can acidify the urine. Therefore, reiterate that all supplementation must be carried out by professional supervision”, he guarantees.

What does too much whey protein do for a guy?

“An excess of whey protein does not cause major harm to health, but can cause acne and gastrointestinal disorders. Furthermore, this excess protein will be excreted from the body through urine,” concludes nutritionist Bruna Lima.
