It all started with an article Vanity Fair which compiled the 25 best TV series episodes of all time. Among them is the “Blackwater” episode Game of Thrones (S02E09). Titled La Néra in French, it tells the story of the epic Battle of Néra Bay, in which the Lannister family, led by Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), faces the formidable fleet of Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane).

Blackwater is one of four episodes in the series written by George RR Martin, along with The Pointy End (S01E08), The Bear and the Maiden Fair (S03E07) and The Lion and the Rose / The Lion and the Rose (S04E02). So Martin congratulated himself on his blog That one of its rare episodes is cited as one of the best in the series’ history, but it went further.
In the same post, he discusses what he thinks is the best series finale of all time, and it’s not Game of Thrones:
If I had to choose one episode that is even more perfect than all the others on the list, I would name the final episode, Six Feet Under.
