The surgeon faces dangers, impediments and precautions when it comes to air transport of postoperative patients
Many people doubt whether air travel is contraindicated for an average of two weeks after surgery, as explained by the medical director of the São Cristóvão Saúde hospital, José Carlos Ferrari Júnior, oncological and general surgeon, full member of the Society Brazilian Oncological Surgery.
The specialist emphasizes that “recovery times vary depending on the type of surgery performed and the patient’s comorbidities,” which will determine the specific interval for each individual before air travel. This care avoids unnecessary exposure to complications.
Again according to the surgeon from São Cristóvão Saúde, some more invasive operations, such as abdominal, cardiac and neurosurgical ones, require a longer recovery period: “It is important to consult the doctor responsible for the operation to assess whether you are fit to travel”.
Some airlines may require a doctor’s note to allow a patient to board after recent surgery. In recent postoperative cases of patients at risk of thromboembolism, Ferrari recommends the use of compression stockings to prevent the formation of blood clots.
Walk on the plane
Other precautions, such as getting up and walking on the plane, to avoid circulatory problems, are recommended by the doctor, especially on long flights.
“If the patient is still taking medications, it is important to present a doctor’s prescription and inform the airline of the need for medications during the flight,” he stresses.
«In case of doubt it is always better to postpone the trip until the doctor authorizes the patient to travel by plane», concludes Ferrari.
