Waterproof hair: how to maintain hydration at the seaside and in the swimming pool in summer?

Hair care should be strengthened during the summer holidays

Taking care of your hair becomes an essential practice in summer, especially if exposed to the sun, sea and swimming pool. While it offers moments of relaxation, this trio can also cause significant damage to your hair.

Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause dryness, discoloration and brittleness of the hair due to ultraviolet rays. Salty sea water and chemicals in the pool can also compromise the health of your hair, leading to problems such as dehydration and loss of shine.

In summer, products with specific sun filters for hair can save your hair. It is also recommended to avoid direct contact of the cables with sea and swimming pool water.

The dermatologist specializing in restoring hair health, Priscilla Pereira, recommends using a leave-in conditioner with sun protection before exposure to the sun.

“The wire perceives a lot of sunlight. It’s like the sun really burns this hair. There are specific products to be applied directly to the locks, such as Leave-In, which are products without rinsing”, explains the specialist.

The leave-in treatment creates a layer of protection on the hair, shielding it from the sun and the effects of sea and pool water. It is important that it is specific to your hair type. And it’s not enough to have thermal protection, you also need to have sun protection described on the package.

For women with thinner hair, the advice is to use a spray sunscreen on your head, as it is lighter and easier to apply.

Anyone with blonde or bleached hair should be especially careful, as the pigments in light hair are different. To avoid suffering the famous greenish fur effect, the bleaching time must be taken into account. If you have had discoloration, “highlights” or “highlights” in the past two weeks, avoid pool water.

“Before entering the pool, take a shower with running water on your hair because the first impact of this hair will be with water without too much copper,” underlines Priscilla.

For all hair types, hydration is also a great ally. Applying vegetable oils to your hair at night helps replenish 18-MEA, a lipid that adheres to the surface of the hair fiber and acts as a lubricant, helping to defend the hair.

“Use it at night, wash it off in the morning. It is not interesting to use it when you are on the beach, under the sun, because the oil retains heat”, advises the dermatologist.

Another reinforcement in the hair protection team is thermal water. The product has a calming action, hydrates the hair and can be reapplied during sun exposure and after swimming, when the hair is wet.

After exposure to the sun, sea and swimming pool, hair care must be reinforced with hydration, reconstruction and nutrition products. Furthermore, chemical processes and heat sources should be avoided during this period.
