Panettone this Christmas is more expensive and a little smaller

The data shows that the sales volume of panettone is 13.8% lower.

An end-of-year icon, the scenario for the sale of panettone in 2023 is different. Research conducted by Scanntech, an intelligence company for the retail sale of food products, found that the product is smaller in size, more expensive and with a lower sales volume.

From the analysis of the scenario it emerges that panettone sales outlets recorded a change in the average size of the premises with a decrease of 21.1% compared to last year. Regarding the price per kilo, the items saw a 27% increase compared to Nov/22, when they arrived in all supermarkets and wholesale stores.

With data from over 40 thousand points of sale (POS), the Scanntech study shows that the average drop in panettone sales volume compared to 2022 is 13.8%. The smallest decline is found in the Central-West region with 27.7%. In second place are the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro with a 21.3% lower sales volume.

In the State of Sao Paulo, the interior recorded a decline of 12.6% and the capital metropolitan region of 10.7% (the same number recorded in the South region). In the North the survey shows a reduction of 20.9% compared to the previous year. However, the Northeast was the only one to record sales growth of 8.2%.

Regionalizing the variation in panettone prices practiced in the month of November, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro recorded the highest variation in the analysis, equal to 45.8%. The interior of São Paulo recorded 24.7%, the capital of São Paulo 21.2%; the Central-West, 28.2%; the North, 12.2%; the South with 24.6% and the North-East with 11.8%.

Sales peak

For Priscila Ariani, marketing director of Scanntech, the data confirms that panettone, despite being available all year round, has more demand and variety in the month of December.

“Whether it is in cans or in regular, traditional or gourmet packaging, the fact is that peak sales occur in December, when consumer demand grows by more than 300%, compared to November,” he points out.

In conclusion, throughout Brazil, Scanntech data shows that the interior of the State of Sao Paulo and the Southern Region are the places where there is a greater importance on the sale of panettone, with 25.5% and 23% respectively, 8%.
