Otorrino gives advice on how to avoid this problem so as not to interrupt your trip.
Traveling by plane or by car in the mountains can cause discomfort and pain in the ears which can lead to pain or pressure in the head, teeth and even face. Otolaryngologist Bruno Borges de Carvalho Barros, from the capital São Paulo, explains that this sensation occurs due to the sudden change in pressure during take-off and landing or due to the height at which the car is located. “This discomfort may pass within a few minutes of the end of the journey, but depending on the duration of the flight it may increase,” he warns.

- The Valsalva maneuver is a method that increases intrathoracic pressure to equalize the pressure in the ears and consists of inhaling, keeping your mouth closed and pinching your nostrils with your fingers while letting the air out through your nose, taking care to control the force of the air to avoid further worsening the pain.
- Chewing gum or food, preferably hard, such as apples or carrots, can help balance the pressure in the ear and avoid pain as this movement forces the facial muscles to move and swallowing helps reduce the feeling of blocked ear.
- Provoking a yawn helps with facial movement, which activates the bones and muscles of the face, clearing the auditory tube and promoting pressure balance.
- Applying a warm compress to your ear for about ten minutes helps greatly relieve pain caused by pressure.
- The use of a nasal spray, provided it is appropriately indicated by the otolaryngologist, helps the passage of air towards the ear, thus rebalancing the pressure more easily.
