One Australian woman it went viral Tick tock in early December after reporting that no one can pronounce her son’s name. The child was called Raul.
In a video shared on the platform, Hannah Sands explains that even his family has difficulty pronouncing the name of his son, born in May 2022.
“Some people don’t tell you when you become a mom how strange it is when you name your baby. Not that it’s not complicated enough to choose a name for your baby, but choosing a name that no one can pronounce… It’s been a journey” , he said in his video posted on December 1st.
Hannah, whose husband is a Brazilian called Paulo, had already noticed that people couldn’t pronounce her partner’s name. But the situation got worse with her son.
“Australians are so annoying with foreign names. My husband’s name is Paul, it’s not that difficult. But everyone here calls him Paul-O and it drives him crazy,” she continued with humor.
Hannah chose Raul to christen her son, because she thought it would make sense in Portuguese and wouldn’t be difficult for Australians to pronounce – which was a mistake.
“My mother came to visit us at the hospital and asked his name, and I said ‘Raul’. She said ‘Rorl. Rorl?’ Given the situation, the couple decided to change the spelling of their son’s name to Raoul, but people continue to pronounce it incorrectly.
To the Tick tock, where Hannah reported, the video has already surpassed 1 million views. In the comments feed, many users identified with the Australian woman’s plight and shared their stories.
“I have a daughter named Persephone and one doctor called her ‘purse phone,’” one follower said. “I’m from Brazil, my name is Iandara, which is phonetically very intuitive for Portuguese, but people still make mistakes all the time,” another commented.
