In 2021, data from the Datafolha Institute commissioned by the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP) revealed that one in four women over the age of 16 experienced physical, psychological or sexual violence during the Covid-19 pandemic, for a total of approximately 17 million people.
The FBSP also recorded 1,350 cases of femicide in 2020, indicating one case every six and a half hours, an increase of 0.7% compared to the previous year. It’s important to note that not all toxic relationships end.
An abusive partnership can start out subtly, trapping people in a cycle of tension, violence, and reconciliation.
Second Danilo Suassunaprofessor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás and creator of the Suassuna Institute, which organizes and holds conferences, seminars, workshops and extensions aimed at psychology professionals, abuse can begin with seemingly harmless gestures, which end up turning into controlling and humiliation.
“The first signs may seem innocent, but they are not. Humiliating a person with jokes and jokes or limiting someone’s freedom are warning signs,” he says.
Abusive relationship
The cycle of the abusive relationship begins with a tension-building phase, followed by the explosion of violence and, finally, the so-called “honeymoon,” in which the abuser apologizes and promises change. Victims often remain silent in the face of these behaviors out of fear or shame, listening and accepting their partner’s excuses, which perpetuates the cycle.
Subtle signs may include a build-up of upset, excessive criticism, constant negative energy in the relationship, and a feeling of discomfort when being with your partner.
“It is essential to recognize these signs to ask for help,” warns the specialist.
He points out that whether it’s due to a constant struggle for control and power, bouts of jealousy, or a lack of support in one partner’s life choices, each of these signs deserves attention and could indicate a toxic relationship.
“To heal from a toxic relationship, it’s critical to recognize the situation and build a support system,” she says.
Accepting the reality of the relationship and investing in self-knowledge are key steps in this process.
