Professionals explain the effectiveness and impact of increasing the amount of protein in the diet with the aim of achieving hypertrophy

The nutritionist of the UGF (Universidade Gama Filho), Monik Cabral, replied that it is useless to increase the consumption of proteins to accelerate muscle hypertrophy, since the body has a limit to carry out protein synthesis. “When our body realizes that the amount of protein is in excess, it eliminates what is needed,” he explains.
Protein consumption is surrounded by myths per se, especially when linked to muscle hypertrophy. Physical education teacher Eduardo Netto, technical director of the Bodytech Company, points out that consuming a high amount of protein is not enough to achieve hypertrophy.
“Regardless of the goal, the diet must always be balanced and adequate for each case. Consult a nutritionist and do not overload your body, as excess, in addition to not causing the expected effect, can cause damage to health,” he says the professor .
Why not abuse protein?
According to Monik, recent studies have shown that eating more than 1.6g of protein per pound does not promote further gains in muscle mass. “That is, increasing supplementation doses or exaggerating food in a meal does not improve protein synthesis,” adds the nutritionist.
According to the professional, proteins play a very important role in building muscles. For this reason, its consumption must be integrated with sports practice not only for muscle building, but also for its recovery.
The specialist also explains that the proteins expended in the practice of the exercises must be reintegrated in the diet. “Upon digestion, the body transforms proteins into amino acids, such as actin and myosin, and our body needs actin and myosin to both build and recover muscle,” she justifies.
Monik explained that it is not possible to take proteins uncontrollably and regardless of the consumption of other food sources, which are also essential for the proper functioning of our body. “In addition to not helping, excess protein can damage the rest of the food intake, as it also causes the satiety effect,” she concluded.
