There are several factors that can contribute to problems such as burning or dry lips; know how to avoid
Lips are made up of extremely sensitive tissue, which is why burns, dryness, cracks, and cracks on the lips are common. And although common, the situation occurs mostly in periods of very hot or cold weather, such as in summer – which begins on December 21st – and winter.
While both extreme temperatures cause situations like burns, they occur for different reasons. And dermatologist Mônica Aribi explains it. “Sunburn changes the cellular structure; the lip also begins to become drier, scaly, with the appearance of cracks and cracks. The cold causes a type of burn due to dehydration. In periods of low temperature there is a decrease in natural production of the glands that lubricate the region, therefore there is greater dryness because the skin is actually less hydrated and lubricated, with the area more atrophic”.
And although the lips suffer from the influence of temperature, there are other factors that influence the dehydration of the region. «In addition to using a lot of muscular movement, the oral mucosa comes into contact with foods, drinks, saliva, cosmetics, especially lipsticks which do not always have natural pigments and contain allergenic preservatives. So it is a place that we must treat with great attention, with specific products”, adds the specialist.
But how to prevent sunburn or dry lips this summer? And how to treat it? The dermatologist explains it. Look down:
Prevent lips
According to Dr. Mônica, the recommended maintain constant and frequent hydration, with formulations rich in vitamins and antioxidants to prevent these problems. “Specific products for local hydration can also contain sunscreens to prevent damage resulting from sun exposure,” she points out.
Another tip is avoid passing your tongue over the lip area, as this only makes the dryness worse. “You immediately feel a sensation of hydration in the area, but soon after microcracks, burning sensation and local redness form,” says the specialist.
The doctor also points out that another compound to keep an eye on is cigarettes. “In addition to being able to cause contact dermatitis, it increases local temperature and this is a predisposing factor for the formation of tumor cells. Cigarette smoking also reduces local irrigation, causes degradation of collagen and gives rise to barcode lines that appear as wrinkles around the lips,” he says.
It’s worth remembering that dryness, cracking and cracking are even more common in people with fuller lips and/or lighter skin, so if this is the case for you, you need to take extra care.
Treatment
According to the dermatologist, when you notice discomfort in your lips, lip moisturizer should be used two to three times a day. Furthermore, you can choose lipsticks from well-known brands with hypoallergenic labelling, dermatologically tested and products of good origin.
When there is dryness on the lips, the dermatologist emphasizes that she always advises patients to do so Never remove “little hairs” or exfoliate the area of the lips with aggressive granules.
“When dryness persists, despite all the recommended treatments, it is advisable to contact a dermatologist for a more specific clinical evaluation. In this way other differential diagnoses will be excluded and more assertive forms of treatment will be sought for the case in question. In the case of burns due to solar radiation, medical intervention may be necessary,” he says.
Finally, the doctor adds that laser lip treatments can improve the quality of the skin in the region. However, always remember Consult a specialist before carrying out any type of treatment to understand if it is the most suitable for your clinical condition.
