Have you ever thought about where those extra pounds go? Out of 10 kg only 1.6 kg is eliminated through urine or body fluids. And the other 8 kg?
For a long time it was believed that body fat was mainly eliminated through urine. But research conducted in 2014 by the team at UNSW Science, in Sydney, Australia, showed that, in reality, the percentage of fat eliminated through urine was small.
In fact, most body fat is eliminated through breathing. According to the study, for every 10 kg of fat, 8.4 kg is transformed into carbon dioxide, which is exhaled.
Of these 10, only 1.6 kg combines with water and can be eliminated through urine, tears, sweat or other body fluids. “Our calculations show that the lungs are the main fat-excreting organ,” concludes the research, published in the British Medical Journal.
This doesn’t mean, however, that deep breathing will help you lose weight. According to researchers, the excess carbohydrates and proteins we eat are converted into triglycerides and stored in lipid droplets inside fat cells.

“You can only breathe a certain number of times a day. On a rest day, for example, you breathe about 12 times a minute, or 17,280 times a day. Each exhalation carries with it about 10 milligrams of carbon,” he concluded Ruben Meerman, author of the study, in an interview with the ABC Science website. “So in a day without exercise you only lose a certain amount of fat.”
Therefore, to lose weight, it is necessary to break down these triglycerides, taking into account that 84% of the atoms of a fat molecule are exhaled in the form of carbon dioxide and the remaining 16% are expelled in the form of water.
