Find out what age is appropriate for some freedoms your child may want to have. Find out more about the tips!
For some time now, many parents have been wondering what the right age is to allow their children to have a cell phone, the freedom to walk alone, access to social media, among many other situations. Although there is no right and universal answer to all these questions, the secret to making the right decision seems to lie, in many cases, in the maturity and responsibility expressed by the child himself.
In an interview with CNN Portugal in 2023, psychologist Marta Leite and pediatricians Fernando Chaves and Manuel Magalhães brought together recommendations based on each child’s perception of maturity and responsibility. Various topics addressed, from cell phone ownership to access to social networks, to independence in the exclusive use of public transport.
Until what age should children have cell phones?
Experts agree that the ideal age for children to have a cell phone varies greatly depending on their maturity. While pediatricians suggest that children should only receive a cell phone from the age of 10, the psychologist indicates 13 as the most appropriate age range. These ages are suggested taking into account the child’s need for communication, as well as the possibility that parents maintain some supervision over their activities.
When should children have social media profiles?
According to Marta Leite, access to social networks should only be allowed from the age of 16. However, the psychologist emphasizes that this is an expectation that often does not fit the current reality. Manuel Magalhães, for his part, underlines that before granting access it is necessary to analyze both the responsibility and the maturity of the child. The pediatrician also believes that parents need to remain vigilant, while at the same time instilling in their children a sense of responsibility for their online behavior.
Is there a recommended age at which children can start going out alone in the evening?
Experts are unanimous in stating that the appropriate age for children to start going out alone in the evening to have fun is between 15 and 16 years. However, they point out, it is necessary to take into account the maturity of the child, since not all children will be ready to take on this responsibility at the same time.
Also discussed were questions about what age is appropriate to wear makeup, access public transportation, receive house keys, among other things. In all cases, the importance of each child’s individual responsibility and maturity is highlighted, as is the need for parental supervision and guidance. They also provide guidance on the essentiality of open conversations and education about the potential risks and possible consequences of one’s choices.
