The expert explains how to acquire this document which makes it easier for those who want to live and study in Portugal
The Henley Passport Index, a ranking that classifies which passports in the world give access to the greatest number of destinations without the need for a prior visa, recently published a list in which the Portuguese document appears in fifth place.
This advantage further reinforces the importance of acquiring a second citizenship, especially Portuguese, as a strategic advantage for those wishing to begin an immigration process.
According to Patricia Valentim, executive director of CV International Assessoriaan immigration, nationality and international affairs consultancy firm, the Portuguese government offers several programs to its citizens.
“In cases where second citizenship is linked to countries that are signatories to specific agreements, unique opportunities open up that allow for eligibility for visas that simplify entry into different regions,” he points out.

Obtaining a second citizenship, particularly Portuguese, offers greater mobility and flexibility in terms of residence or study, which is particularly beneficial for those wishing to explore opportunities in different nations.
“It is critical to recognize that every situation is unique and that various factors influence the immigration process in different parts of the world. Professional skills, educational history and other elements play an important role in this process,” Patricia emphasizes.
Where to start?
Faced with the countless advantages, a common doubt arises, namely where to start or whether there really is some family connection that allows you to obtain the long-awaited benefit. However, Patricia warns that the process can be complex and vary depending on the situation.
For many people, especially those seeking citizenship by descent, the first step is usually to gather documents that demonstrate their connection to the country.
“This may include original certificates of birth, marriage, death or something that proves the relationship to the person of Portuguese descent. In some cases it may be necessary to register it in the civil registry of Portugal. If applicable to your case, this is a crucial step,” advises the expert.
Be prepared for bureaucracy
Patricia explains that this is something that can take some time, and it is important to be prepared for the possibility of dealing with some bureaucratic steps.
“For this reason it is essential to enlist the help of professionals specialized in Portuguese citizenship, who can support the entire process and guide the applicant in more detail based on his specific situation,” underlines the director.
Unlike Brazilian citizens, Portuguese citizens have a bilateral agreement with the United States, which allows them to enter the country without the need for a tourist or business visa, for a maximum of 90 days.
“This streamlines the bureaucratic part of travel, be it business, tourism or family reunions,” he concludes.
