The monumental works of the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos on display at the Pitti Palace, the Uffizi Galleries and the Oscar Niemeyer Museum
Portuguese Joana Vasconcelos opens space for contemporary art in the most classic galleries of Florence. At the exhibition Between sky and heart , three of his works are on display until January 14th at the Uffizi Gallery and at Palazzo Pitti.
And now some great news for Brazil: the artist has just inaugurated “Extravaganzas”, a major exhibition at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (or “museum of the eye”), in Curitiba, open until May 26th. Works such as “Valquíria Miss Dior” and “Valquíria Matarazzo” are exhibited in the space, as well as models created by Joana.
Shoes or pans?
The artist’s irreverent installations seek to challenge gender conventions and stereotypes, as well as bring a different perspective to the history and traditions of art. The artisanal nature of his works contrasts with the monumental scale of the scenography, which leaves everyone speechless.
The work “Marilyn” is exhibited in the White Room of the Pitti Palace, a gigantic sculpture that at first sight emulates the pair of shoes worn by Marilyn Monroe in the classic “The Seven Year Itch” from 1955. But just look more carefully to understand that the work is made with stainless steel pans! The artist’s idea is to establish a contrast between female sensuality and the domestic role to which women are traditionally relegated. Scroll through the gallery below to see more photos.
Also at Pitti, the work “Família Feliz” is a revisitation of the Christian theme “Holy Family”, in which Mary and Joseph are replaced by Flora and Bacchus who are holding a child in their arms and the three are wrapped in laborious handmade works all ‘crochet. Joana wanted to enhance the pagan aspect of the rituals and enhance the eroticism and joy of existence.
Joana at the Uffizi
To close, “Royal Valkyrie” is an imposing sculpture hanging from the ceiling of the Tribune of the Uffizi Gallery. A set of various materials, such as wool, feathers, ropes and LED lights form a work of various colours. The artist refers to the myth of Valkyrie and her warrior spirit, through its monumental proportions.
The galleries are open every day from 8.15am to 6.30pm and access to the exhibition is included in the museum ticket, which costs €16 for Palazzo Pitti and €25 for that. Uffizi Gallery. In Curitiba, the exhibition at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum costs R$30 for the entire exhibition.
