Care for vascular health must be doubled at high temperatures
Experiencing high temperatures can be a challenging experience for many, but for those dealing with the discomfort of varicose veins, intense heat can pose additional risks to vascular health.
Treatment for those suffering from varicose veins should increase in summer because the heat favors the dilation of blood vessels and, since varicose veins are already diseased and dilated, this increased dilation makes the flow even slower, explains angiologist Cristienne Souza .
“This increases pressure in the veins, contributing to the discomfort, swelling and pain characteristic of this condition. High temperatures can exacerbate symptoms, leading to worsening blood circulation and increasing the risk of complications such as edema and pain,” says the specialist.
The angiologist says there are significant differences in the effect of heat on varicose veins, depending on the stage of the condition and other health factors of the patient. People with more advanced varicose veins may experience stronger impacts due to vascular fragility and impaired circulatory efficiency.
Furthermore, underlying health conditions can modulate the vascular response to heat, influencing the manifestation and severity of symptoms in patients with varicose veins.
Preventive measures during hot weather to minimize the impact on people with varicose veins include maintaining good hydration to preserve blood viscosity, avoiding long periods of standing or sitting which could worsen venous stasis, and l use of graduated compression stockings to improve venous return.
