Odorless and colorless, carbon monoxide hinders the circulation and distribution of oxygen throughout the body, causing asphyxiation.
On the first day of the year, a group of 4 young people were found dead inside a BMW in Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina. According to initial information from the police, a fault following the modification of the car would have brought carbon monoxide into the vehicle.
- What is already known about death: The young people who died were 16, 19, 21 and 24 years old. According to the deputy in charge of the case, Bruno Effori, the victims spent about four hours in the car racing, with the air conditioning working.
- Inhalation hazards: Leaks of this gas are often fatal because it has no odor or color. Carbon monoxide molecules bind to hemoglobin, hindering the circulation and distribution of oxygen, causing asphyxiation.
- More “powerful” than oxygen: According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hemoglobin binds to carbon monoxide approximately 200-300 times more than to oxygen, which forms carboxyhemoglobin, preventing oxygen from binding to hemoglobin and deprive our organs of receiving oxygen.
- Symptoms of poisoning: Initial symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning range from tiredness, weakness, drowsiness, and feeling drowsy. See a list of all the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning:
- Heachache;
- Dizziness;
- Weakness;
- Abdominal pain and vomiting;
- Chest pain;
- Mental confusion.
- Avoid accidents: To avoid gas poisoning, experts recommend constant maintenance of devices that emit monoxide, such as cars, gasoline engines, stoves, lanterns, wood and coal, gas stoves, heating systems. At the slightest symptom of poisoning you should immediately contact your doctor.
