Two little boys killed because of something we see all the time, at any celebration. They may seem harmless, but balloons, yes, latex balloons, used in party decorations, can represent a very serious choking hazard for little ones. There have already been several famous cases, in various parts of the world, but, in the last month alone, two of them have made headlines here in Brazil.

One of these took place in João Pessoa, Paraíba. A 9-year-old autistic boy choked on a piece of bladder while waiting for his parents at an autism rehabilitation center. According to the press office, the boy took the balloon from the hand of the professional who accompanied him and put it in his mouth, before putting it in his mouth and performing a bronchoaspiration. He had three cardiac arrests and was hospitalized in serious condition, but he could not resist and died on 9 March.

The other took place in February, in Luziânia, Goiás. On February 12, a 10-year-old boy died after ingesting a blister. He was with other children, helping to blow up balloons for a party, when he accidentally swallowed them. He ran into the kitchen and asked for water, already frightened, before passing out. His mother took him to the emergency room, but on the spot the boy is presumed to have died.

The sad stories serve to warn about the danger of this type of object, so everyday. “At a party, if you hear a balloon “burst”, you can go out and look for the pieces and throw them ALL in the trash “, leads the emergency room nurse Patt Sanches, author of Profile @minicuidadoson Instagram.

“It is by inhaling a fragment of the balloon that a party can turn into tragedy, if a bursting bladder obstructs a child’s airflow. With each attempt to catch a breath, the bladder can be sucked in even more. The same mechanism happens with a piece of plastic bag or wrapping paper and can be just as dangerous, “he warns. According to her, most deaths from suffocation or suffocation occur in the first year of life. So, attention is little!

What to do to help the baby if he has put a blister in his mouth?

“If you can see the blister and it’s easy, you can remove it with your fingers. If it’s hard, don’t try, then don’t push any further,” he explains.

Also, according to the nurse, the most common maneuvers to help the little ones in situations like this are the pat on the back and the famous Heimlich maneuver, which is done like this:

How to do the Heimlich maneuver?

  1. Stand behind the baby and wrap your arms around him.
  2. Make a fist and keep your thumb up. Place the closed hand on the upper abdomen, between the navel and the rib cage.
  3. Put your other hand on your closed fist and grasp it firmly.
  4. Firmly pull both hands in and up, as if drawing a comma with your fist. Repeat the maneuver if necessary.
