Menopause, a natural phase in women’s lives that marks the transition from the fertile to the non-reproductive period, generally occurs around age 50 and can occur earlier or later, depending on the body. This process is characterized by a reduction in hormone production and is associated with several symptoms, such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, anxiety and irritability.

Cannabidiol (CBD), a natural, non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant, can be used to treat these conditions and therefore improve the quality of life of women at this stage of menopause.

Cannabidiol has anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory properties, and these properties are effective in reducing anxiety, pain, and hormonal changes associated with menopause. Its use also brings better quality of sleep, another common challenge in this stage of life, and consequently, improves this patient’s daily routine.

“The use of medicinal cannabis can help menopausal women in several ways. CBD acts on the endocannabinoid system, helping to modulate the response to discomfort caused by decreased levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body, helping to relieve inflammation and improves sleep”, explains José Manzi, medical director of the Simple cannabiscompany that assists and facilitates the import of the best cannabis-based medicines with Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency).

Change in symptoms

Menopause symptoms vary from woman to woman, but generally, in addition to the famous hot flashes, they include night sweats, irritability, tiredness and insomnia. Being a natural and effective alternative to relieve these symptoms, the use of CBD by women at this stage has been tested and has brought positive results.

A study conducted by Harvard in 2022, of 131 women in perimenopause, the period before menopause, and 127 who had previously experienced the condition, revealed that 79% of participants experienced relief from symptoms.

The connection between cannabis and menopause treatment is not only about physical conditions, but also about improving women’s mental health, reducing anxiety and mood swings.

“The anxiolytic and antidepressant properties of CBD help combat emotional symptoms common during menopause, such as anxiety, irritability and possible mood changes. This package also includes improving sleep, as sleep disorders often affect women in this phase, ending up impacting their routine and quality of life,” explains Manzi.

It does not cause addiction

Treatment with cannabis-based medicines does not usually cause any cognitive changes in patients, nor does it cause addiction, since the natural compound responsible for possible hallucinations, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is not present in the concentrations of CBD used in therapy by patients, or it is present in small quantities, without the possibility of causing these effects.

Any patient interested in using cannabidiol must first undergo a medical consultation to evaluate indications and contraindications. And only with the recipe in hand will it be possible to start the treatment.

At Simples Cannabis, for example, you can make an appointment with one of the specialists and undergo telemedicine. Subsequently, the company assists Anvisa in all procedures and documentation to obtain the drug.

“The use of medicinal cannabis is not limited only to the treatment of symptoms such as menopause, but extends to all ages and the treatment of numerous other pathologies,” concludes the expert.

It is also worth mentioning that in 2014 and 2018 respectively the studies published by Jama and for Hand highlighted the use of medicinal cannabis as an effective option in pain management, both as an alternative and adjunctive treatment.
