The free app helps locate lost animals with facial biometrics

PUPz has already found around 4,000 cats and dogs; know how it works

Pets are increasingly present in the homes of Brazilian families and the pandemic has favored the adoption of pets. According to the Radar Pet 21 survey, around 30% of respondents became pet tutors around this time.

In the early months of the health crisis, a survey by the International Union for Animal Protection (UIPA) revealed that animal adoption has grown by 400%. As the number of pets in Brazilian homes grows, concern for their safety only increases.

With the advancement of technology, there are already several solutions so that tutors do not have to go through the anguish of losing a pet, as has happened with Stefany Cadamuro Fernandes.

In May of this year, Tysonthe vet’s dog ran out of the gate of her house while she was gone, but luckily she was registered on the app PUPzwho informed her that her dog had escaped and had already been found.

The app uses facial biometrics to connect tutors to people who find pets on the street. “I received a notification in the app that Tyson had been found and that he was with a Bruno. The app also warned that he had been found in a butcher’s shop, so I started chatting to go to the indicated location,” says Stefany . .

“I arrived at the place in 4 minutes, where some children were already waiting for me with Tyson on their lap. After a short conversation with them, they told me they contacted the app because of the collar Tyson was using,” adds the owner. of one year old dog.

Pupz is free for Android and iOS and already has 2,500 registered users, not counting those who access the platform via browser, without registering. The system, which has been in operation for about a year, has already recorded around 4,000 conversations.

As these chats are used to exchange information on lost animals, this is estimated to be the approximate number of cats and dogs found with Pupz’s help.

How does the app work?

The feature was developed by Carlos Smithwho was inspired by Channel, her Golden Retriever, to create the app and her company specializing in products to ensure the safety of animals, such as collars, harnesses and identification tags.

“It took years to develop this application, which through artificial intelligence is able to connect the points of the animal’s face to identify it. For this we use three convolutional neural networks, a class successfully applied in processing and digital image analysis, and that underlies the facial recognition of pets in our system, “says Fabbro.

To use the mechanism just download it, log in with your Google account, Facebook or email, and add the registration, which collects all the data of the animal in the medical records (which can be accessed via chips installed in the collars).

Also, you need to add photos of the animal’s face and muzzle for the app to activate recognition. If the dog or cat registered in the system gets lost, anyone who finds him on the street can take a picture of his face and upload it to the app.

Therefore, the neural network performs facial biometry, which accuses him of being lost and indicates who the tutor is. From that moment on, a private chat opens between the person who found it and the tutor: the information is encrypted.
