If the life of Rock in Rio began now, we would see a glittering Ney Matogrosso opening the festival, among the Iron Maiden fans; such different artists sharing the same event, like Baby Consuelo and Nina Hagen, and an audience without even a cell phone to fill the network with photos.
Although the first edition was in 1985, this year’s edition celebrates 40 years of Brazil’s largest music festival, which will take place from 13 to 22 September 2024.
With versions in Las Vegas (USA), Lisbon (Portugal) and Madrid (Spain), Rock in Rio has been an intangible cultural heritage of Rio de Janeiro since 2022.
Following creator Roberto Medina’s initial proposal to bring together all the tribes of the music world, this year’s edition will be no different. Among the artists already announced are the Brazilians Lulu Santos, Paralamas do Sucesso, Ludmilla, Ivete Sangalo and Gloria Groove.
Already the align international will see performances by Ed Sheeran, Joss Stone and Angélique Kidjo.
Well, at least that’s what we know so far. But not everything has been celebration in these four decades.
CURIOSITIES ABOUT ROCK IN RIO
When Roberto Medina created Rock in Rio in 1984, the businessman wanted to appeal to all the tribes of the music world. Even if it were necessary to bring together names like Baby Consuelo and Nina Hagen, Kid Abelha and AC/DC, Lulu Santos and Iron Maiden in the same festival.
And no one better than the transgressor Ney Matogrosso to open the first edition, in January 1985. In an evening that brought together around 300 thousand people, the singer, who according to the organizers of the event “is rock even when he isn’t”, shared his show with fans of artists such as Queen, Iron Maiden and the British hard rock band Whitesnake.
“When I started singing, people started throwing boiled eggs at me. And I pushed them back, you know? Because I won’t take any insults,” Ney recalls in the series ‘Rock in Rio – A História’, showing on Globoplay.

The first edition, in Jacarepaguá, lasted 10 days and saw 31 attractions performing on what was considered the largest stage in the world, with an 80 meter beam.
Between performances, the audience was able to see the Queen band, Rod Stewart and Ozzy Osbourne, the first to be confirmed at the time. Among the Brazilians were artists such as Gilberto Gil and Erasmo Carlos.
However, by order of the then governor of Rio de Janeiro, Leonel Brizola, the Cidade do Rock had to be demolished and the 1991 edition was held at the Maracanã, where the Norwegian band A-ha opened the festival in front of a record audience of 198 people. thousands of people.
Despite the high numbers of the festival, according to entrepreneur Roberta Medina, the debts incurred in the 1985 edition would only be paid at Rock in Rio II, in 1991, when artists such as Guns N’ Roses, Prince and George Michael performed.

The third edition will take place only a decade later, again in Cidade do Rock, where Cássia Eller performed, who sent the audience into a frenzy when she lifted her blouse and showed her breasts, and bassist Nick Olivieri (“Queens of the Stone Age ‘) played completely naked.
Despite four Portuguese editions, in Lisbon, between 2004 and 2010, the Brazilian public will need to wait another 10 years to see Rock in Rio IV, which lasted seven days, attracting around 100 thousand people a day and align with names like Coldplay, Evanescent, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Motörhead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and System of a Down.
One of the largest tribal blends, in the entire history of the event, took place in 2013, in the unusual and cathartic show where the band Sepultura shared the stage with Zé Ramalho. ‘Zépultura’, as the meeting became known, performed “Admirável Mundo Novo” with heavy metal notes.
“I don’t see any problem, I’ve had rock and roll in my work since I was young. Two things are happy in my life: rock and forró”, described Zé Ramalho in an interview at the time for the Multishow channel .
