Few things are as unpleasant as seeing the water level in the toilet rise quickly after flushing. However, don’t panic: we explain how to clean toilets without a plunger! (Spoiler: it’s sometimes easier to do it without than with it.)
Let’s first figure out how to understand that the toilet is clogged – the sooner you realize that a problem is brewing, the easier it is to solve it. The first and foremost sign of a blockage is of course a change in flushing speed. The second is the unpleasant odor that persists even after all the waste is flushed down the drain. If you notice any of these red flags, it’s time to take action!
How to unclog a toilet without a plunger: preparation for work
Of course, you are not disposing of nuclear waste: clearing the blockage poses no serious danger. However, cleaning expert and cleaning company president Alicia Sokolowski advises playing it safe.
- Find rubber gloves: the longer and thicker they are, the better.
- Remove as much water from the toilet as possible – this can be done using a plastic cup.
- Open the bathroom doors – the more ventilated it is, the better.
- Turn off the water – this will prevent the toilet from accidentally overflowing while cleaning.
- Keep a bucket and some old towels nearby in case water gets on the floor.

How to unclog a toilet without a plunger: 5 easiest methods and one unusual one
Method one: hot water
There’s no simpler trick to unclogging a toilet without using a plunger: all you need is hot water. Remember: this is hot water, not boiling water – due to too high a temperature, the earthenware may crack.
The way to do it:
- Remove the water from the toilet.
- Pour in lukewarm water to warm it up.
- Wait a few minutes, then suddenly pour a bucket of hot water into the toilet.
- Wait a few minutes and drain the water from the tank.
If the blockage is not serious and is of organic origin, then hot water will be enough to get rid of it.
Second method: hot water and dishwashing liquid
