A Brazilian woman paid R$45,000 to change her eye color: “I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror”

In Brazil surgery is prohibited. The procedure was performed in Lausanne, Switzerland

A 24-year-old Brazilian model has decided to undergo surgery to change the color of her eyes. Since last year, Lavyons Valença stopped having brown eyes and changed them to blue.

Since the procedure is banned in Brazil, he performed the surgery in Lausanne, Switzerland. “With my brown eyes, which is my natural color, I couldn’t identify myself, I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror,” the model said in an interview with Fantástico.

She even wore contact lenses before deciding to have surgery. “I opted for surgery because I didn’t have the right treatment, because I wanted to sleep with the lens, I slept with the lens. I woke up with the lens. So, on several occasions I had infections. That’s when I really said : ‘I need to change the color of my eyes,'” she said.

The surgery is performed using a microneedle or laser and lasts about 30 minutes. Doctors apply pigmentation to the cornea, as if it were a tattoo, to change the color of the region.

“We created a kind of tunnel in the cornea, which is done in seven seconds. Then I started introducing pigment to change the color of the eyes with keratopigmentation […] They are natural pigments derived from metals and minerals. The laboratory that produces these pigments has obtained all the validations from the European authorities”, the doctor responsible for the intervention, Théodore Hojabr, told Fantástico.

For the operation the model had to pay eight thousand Swiss francs, more than 45 thousand reals. According to her, her eyes were very sensitive to light for three months, then the situation became normal. “If they ask me, I say: they are my eyes. I bought them, they are mine. I am happy, I feel fulfilled, I feel very good. My self-esteem has changed a lot”, she concluded.

In Brazil, the surgery is only recommended for blind people, in cases where the cornea is compromised and white and a tattoo is made to resemble a healthy eye. For those with normal vision, the advice is to use contact lenses if you simply want to change the color.

According to Juliana Lasneaux, ophthalmologist at CBV-Hospital de Olhos, keratopigmentation is like a tattoo on the cornea. “For example, the person has lost vision in one eye and the cornea, which is the transparent membrane, has become opaque. With this procedure we make a tattoo, a drawing of this white cornea to resemble the healthy eye, the eye contralateral,” he explains.
