Botox study compares twins: one had the toxin for 19 years, the other didn’t

A new research result shows the efficiency of treatment through images; the experts comment

A scientific experiment involving two twin sisters aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of botulinum toxin (popularly called botox) in preventing wrinkles and fine lines.

The study followed the sisters since they were 25 years old. You receive the substance applied two or three times a year, on the forehead and on the glabellar region (area of the face between the eyebrows, just above the nose). The other asked the question twice, once at 31 and once at 35.

The first analysis took place in 2006, when they were 38 years old. According to Dr. William Binder published in the journal Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, “photographic documentation shows that hyperfunctional wrinkles of the forehead and glabella are not evident at rest in the regularly treated twin. On the contrary, they are visible in the minimally treated twin.” He concluded that “long-term Botox treatment can prevent the development of visible facial lines at rest.”

Six years after the first analysis, Binder and fellow researcher Alexander Rivkin revised the research. The first twin had continued with the regular questions, while the second had only had one more question. The difference between the skins remained significant.

“The skin texture of the treated twin appears smooth with small pores, while the skin of the sporadically treated twin shows signs of aging, including more wrinkles and visible pores,” the researchers assessed in an article published in the scientific journal Dermatologic Surgery.

It is worth mentioning that both sisters have similar skin care. The one who underwent the treatment lives sporadically in Munich, Germany; the other lives in Los Angeles, USA, a city more affected by the sun than Germany.

Does Botox work?

In the opinion of Thiago Martinsbiomedical scientist from Minas Gerais, professor and master in Aesthetic Medicine, the difference in aging between the two twin sisters is explained by the effects of botulinum toxin on the skin aging process and by the factors that influence skin aging in general.

“Botox works by preventing the contraction of muscles that cause fine lines. Botox applications help treat wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows, around the eyes and other fine lines,” he points out.

According to the dermatologist Luca Mirandaalthough there are anti-wrinkle creams and other products to prevent or reverse this process, botulinum toxin is able to bring more visible and immediate results “if correctly indicated, since not all types of wrinkles are treatable in this way”.

After application, botulinum toxin begins to take effect within 7 to 14 days. The effect lasts three to six months, until it gradually disappears and muscle action returns.

If you already have wrinkles and fine lines, you can continue to benefit from the use of Botox. “The toxin works by relaxing the muscles under the skin. This relaxation reduces tension in the overlying skin, which can soften existing wrinkles and prevent them from deepening,” emphasizes biomedical doctor Thiago Martins.
