We recall the evaluation carried out with four brands available in supermarkets
It has never been easier to enjoy a nice gin and tonic during Carnival. As the Christmas holidays approach, we’ll tell you about the best “GTs” to bet on during the celebrations. In February 2020, Paladar journalist Renata Mesquita gathered experts on the drink, including bartenders, journalists and fans of the drink, to choose the best of all.
Very practical, this version of the drink is perfect to consume in any situation. Be it beach parties, parks, parties or on the street. Marcos Lee, consultant and partner of the 202 tonic brand, comments that it is not only the ease of this type of drink that stands out, but also the standard of quality it brings. “Often, at large events, bartenders don’t have much experience and are in a hurry to prepare the drinks. In these cases, the canned version not only offers convenience, but also standardization”, he explains.
Check out the Paladar and Tin Tin rankings!
1st place: Tanqueray
With an alcohol content of 6.5%, this drink available in a can or bottle was chosen as a champion by the judges, who rated it as closest to a “real” gin and tonic in terms of flavour. On Pão de Açúcar Online, the 275 ml bottle costs R$ 20.99 and the can costs R$ 13.90, on the Carrefour website.
2nd place: Easy Booze
A drink also considered by the jury to have a pleasant bitterness, it stands out for being slightly sweet and with a very present floral and anise flavour, characterizing it as a drink with more personality than the first place drink. It has 8% alcohol. On the Oba Hortifruit Online website, a 269 ml can costs R$8.99.
3rd place: Skol Beats GT
Despite its popularity on the streets, this Ambev drink was considered by one of the judges to be a “very sweet soft drink”. At 7.9% alcohol, it has been analyzed as a ready-made drink that doesn’t actually resemble the original gin and tonic. You can buy it in a can or a long-necked bottle in any market, on Pão de Açúcar Online, the can costs R$4.99 and the bottle R$8.29, both 269 ml.
4th place: Flowers Gin
More like lemon soda, this ready-made drink doesn’t taste like the original drink. Very sweet, it does not have the characteristic bitterness of gin and tonic. Nonetheless, it’s delicious and, even at 7.9% ABV, the alcohol is almost undetectable. A 269 ml can costs R$6.95 on the Empório Frei Caneca website.
