Small garden: 10 tips for those with little space

Make use of every centimeter to grow greenery. We present 10 tips on how to grow a garden in a small area

Do you have little space at home, but want to have a green space to contemplate or interact? Below, we present 10 tips that will help you in this mission. The suggestions were provided by the landscape designer Alex Hanazaki in the Casa Claudia Decoration Course:

Tip 1. Discover and define the nature of your space. Do you want to create a contemplative garden (which will act as a setting) or an interactive one (which the resident/visitor feels part of)? Knowing what you want is the first step in defining how to create the garden.

Tip 2. Contemplative gardens are very common in the front of the house and in side hallways. These areas require designs in which the distribution of plants in the space is perfect.

Tip 3. For interactive gardens, surrounded by the architecture of the house or neighboring properties, plants in partial shade and shade are best suited. Be careful though: when you start to create this space, the suggestion is to initially distribute the decorative elements (such as benches) and, only later, decide on the size of the beds, the type of each space, etc.

Tip 4. On open terraces, where there is a lot of wind, hard-leaved species such as balsam, cica, viburnum, gardenia, azalea and boxwood are recommended. This feature will ensure that the plant remains alive and intact for longer, without being destroyed by the gusts.

Tip 5. If you have an enclosed space, such as a balcony, your problem will not be the wind but the heat generated by the glass, which can dehydrate the plants. It is necessary to pay attention to the watering of these species and the suggestion is to keep the windows open, allowing the room to be ventilated. In this situation, fruit trees, such as mandarin, lemon, jabuticaba tree, etc. are recommended.

Tip 6. If you have a sunny area, recommended species include aromatic ones. Invest in them.

Tip 7. Vegetable gardens are welcome for small spaces and can also be useful for growing the spices you will use in cooking. To make one, choose earthworm humus (to enrich the soil with nutrients). One idea is to create a composition with wooden or metal cachepots and, in each piece, grow a different species.

Tip 8. To ensure a beautiful and harmonious appearance, it is important to invest in vases made from the same material. However, they do not necessarily have to be the same color and size. And, of course, match the vases to the furniture.

Tip 9. Vertical gardens are widely used (and recommended) for small spaces and areas surrounded by large walls. But it is necessary to pay attention to the species chosen to compose this scenario. Princess, fern and peperomie earrings are among the most recommended.

Tip 10. Topiary art, a pruning technique to make the plant less bulky, is a good resource for saving garden space and creating beautiful scenes.
