YouTuber and comedian Diogo Defante has corrected his eyelid ptosis, removing his trademark “droopy eye”
Known for his spontaneity, his good humor and his “droopy eye”, YouTuber and comedian Diogo Defante announced on his Instagram the beginning of a new era. This is because he has undergone eyelid ptosis correction, which puts an end to his best-known physical characteristic.
Ptosis is the loss of the eyelid margin, where the lifter muscle of the upper eyelid fails to open the eyelid properly. Hence the term “droopy eye”. The correction can be aesthetically motivated, but also functional, as in the case of Defante. The comedian also claimed that the problem was affecting his eyesight.
What is the surgery like?
According to Dr. Fernanda Fayad, ophthalmologist at the CBV-Hospital de Olhos and specialist in ocular plastic surgery, the ptosis correction operation consists in improving the position of the upper eyelid, which in these cases is lower than normal.
“Depending on the degree of ptosis, i.e. the drooping of the eyelid, the pupil can be compromised. Therefore, the visual axis can be partially or completely obstructed. By correcting the position of the eyelid, the pupil is freed and there is an improvement in the field visual,” he says.
According to the doctor, there are different surgical techniques for this correction and the choice depends on each case. “In cases like Defante, where the ptosis was caused by trauma, the eyelid muscle is normal and is simply disconnected. So the surgery puts the muscle back in its original position,” explains the doctor.
In 2020, in an interview with Flow Podcast, Defante explained that his condition was acquired eyelid ptosis. “There was trauma and the tendon weakened, [o tendão] eye-rolling,” he said then.
According to Fernanda, there is no way to predict how long the outcome of ptosis surgery will last. This is because numerous factors influence this process, such as muscle strength, the cause of the ptosis, and even the age of the patient.
Difference for blepharoplasty
It is common for there to be some confusion between blepharoplasty and eyelid ptosis correction procedures. After all, both are performed on the upper eyelid, and can even be performed at the same time, both with the aim of improving aesthetics, but also to improve the field of vision.
However, there are differences between the two procedures. “Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic eyelid operation in which excess tissue, such as skin and pockets of fat, is removed. In ptosis surgery, the goal is to elevate the position of the upper eyelid, which is lower,” explains the doctor.
