24 hours to get rid of a hangover: foods that fight the discomfort

A short guide on what you should (or shouldn’t) eat and drink during the day to beat the blues

Who has never felt that terrible morning feeling after a long night of drinking, throw away the first glass! So that empty glasses do not bring regrets, nausea and much less sadness, which is extremely prohibited at Carnival, we have created a small guide on what you should (or shouldn’t) eat and drink during the day to defeat your ailments.

When you wake up, two glasses of water are essential. Hydration is the key to recovery. Half an hour later, replace the coffee with ginger tea with honey. As a diuretic, caffeine can dehydrate the body and, by narrowing blood vessels, make headaches worse. Ginger calms the stomach and reduces nausea, while the fructose contained in honey helps absorb alcohol and relieve suffering.

Don’t even think about skipping breakfast. Foods like oatmeal, avocado, eggs and toast promote energy and well-being. Mushroom omelette and poached eggs are good options, as they contain cysteine, a substance that facilitates the excretion of acetaldehyde, a toxin produced by the metabolization of ethanol in the liver and responsible for the hangover effect.

Another nice alternative is a toast to avoid. The good fats in avocado help digest alcohol. Seasoning it with spices helps the liver and gallbladder to function. However, dairy products should be avoided because they are difficult to digest. As incredible as it may seem, a simple spicy cheese can cause heartburn and make the situation worse.

To accompany it, tomato juice reduces the burning sensation, hence the legend that Bloody Mary cures hangovers. The truth is that the glucose contained in the fruit helps regulate blood sugar levels and relieve fatigue without irritating the stomach, which would happen if it were orange or lemon juice.

After a couple of hours, drink two more glasses of water and eat a banana. Gentle on the digestive system, this energetic fruit is rich in electrolytes, mainly potassium, vitamin B and carbohydrates that combat the depressant effects of alcohol.

When you are hungry, drink two glasses of water. You’ll notice that what seemed unlikely has happened: the day has passed and you feel ready for another. Before the next sip, however, have dinner.

Tip? Homemade hamburger, preferably lean meat, chicken or fish. Protein will help regulate blood sugar levels. To accompany, sweet potatoes, which contain slow sugars, which will avoid the peak of hypoglycemia, while vitamin B and fiber prevent the feeling of heaviness. If possible, brown it with olive oil in the oven, and don’t fry it by immersion!

Remember: two glasses of water will still go a long way, thanks. And before going to bed, a cup of chamomile with honey will not hurt anyone.
