Journalist Pedro Andrade introduced his daughter Isabel, born at the end of January and born from her marriage to Benjamin Parker
At the end of January, journalist Pedro Andrade, former host of “Manhattan Connection” and travel programs on GNT (“Pedro Pelo Mundo”), showed the world his daughter Isabel, who was born abroad with a solid belly and is the result of her marriage to hairdresser Benjamin Parker Thigpen.
Despite the prejudices that still permeate us, minority groups are gaining more and more rights and, today, same-sex couples are allowed to have biological children.
“Assisted reproduction for same-sex couples has been legal in Brazil since 2015 thanks to a resolution of the Federal Council of Medicine. And, due to the bureaucracy in the adoption process, the search for human reproduction clinics by this public has increased significantly in recent years,” he explains. Rodrigo Rosahuman reproduction specialist and clinical director of the Clínica Mater Prime, in Sao Paulo.
“Assisted reproductive treatments have helped bring about changes in culture. The technique has allowed same-sex couples to conceive and have the wonderful experience of creating a family. This has changed the way society views motherhood and fatherhood, expanding the possibilities for forming families and challenging traditional conceptions of parenthood,” says Rodrigo.
Taboos and misinformation
But despite becoming more common, the debate about fertility in same-sex male couples is still surrounded by taboos and misinformation.
According to Rodrigo, assisted reproduction for male homosexual couples tends to be more complicated than for female couples. This is because, in addition to the donation of oocytes, which takes place through material banks that guarantee the anonymity of the recipients and donors, it is necessary to look for a supportive belly, that is, a woman willing to carry the child in her womb.
«But there are strict rules regarding the support belly, and the woman willing to give up her uterus for the surgery must be over 18 years old and be a blood relative up to the fourth degree of one of the partners. Other cases require authorization from the Federal Council of Medicine and, if there are no candidates for uterine transfer, the procedure cannot be performed,” explains Rodrigo Rosa.
After finding a supportive womb and an egg donor, it is up to the couple to decide which of the two will be the sperm donor, to carry out a procedure known as In Vitro Fertilization.
“Then the egg is fertilized in the laboratory and inserted into the uterus of the woman willing to carry the child. After about 15 days it is already possible to verify the success of the operation”, explains the specialist.
“In some cases, in addition to medical monitoring, it is interesting that the couple also asks for legal support, since the woman who has given up the uterus can ask for custody of the child, since the child possesses the genetic material of all those who participated in the process,” says the doctor.
Finally, Rodrigo stresses that it is essential for these couples to seek help from clinics specializing in treatment, so that they receive all the support and guidance needed to make their dream come true.
