Keukenhof: How to Visit Tulip Gardens in the Netherlands in 2024

The park on the outskirts of Amsterdam will welcome visitors between March and May. Check out the tips to find out

The big spring event in the Netherlands is the Keukenhof Gardens , located in Lisse, about 40 minutes from the center of Amsterdam. The place receives a legion of tourists every year in search of tulips and countless other flowers blooming in flowerbeds that seem to come from an immersive reality installation. In 2024, the festival will return between March 21 and May 12. Tickets are sold only via the site and cost €19.50.

Despite being critically important, tulips are not the only flowers grown at Keukenhof

Although ephemeral, the floral designs that cover the park’s 32 hectares are designed with mathematical precision throughout the year and the planting of the seven million bulbs is done manually by just 30 gardeners. The flagship obviously remains the tulips, the export of which has been a source of national pride since the 17th century: in the Keukenhof gardens, founded in 1949, they appear in 800 variables.

The bulbs are planted one by one

In addition to outdoor gardens, the park features displays of different types of flowers in pavilions and children’s attractions, including playgrounds, a farm, a maze, and scavenger hunts. The complex also organizes guided tours (150 euros for one hour), by bicycle (11 euros for three hours or 16 euros for the whole day) or by boat (10 euros for 45 minutes), which sails along a canal around the fields. .

During the guided tour the experts explain everything about the plants, cultivation methods, the theme of the designs and the tradition of Dutch tulips

To get there there are buses that leave from the Amsterdam train station called “RAI – Europaplein”. In this case you pay a combined ticket which entitles you to entry to the park and return transport at a cost of €36.50. There are also buses that leave from Schipol Airport and the city of Leiden for €31.50. For those traveling by car, parking costs €8 and can also be paid in advance. Tickets must be purchased via the site, clicking on “public transport” or “car”.

The buses that carry out the route are of the ARRIVA company

But don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ll find a flowery landscape just for you: the place receives around 800,000 visitors a month. To avoid the crowds a bit, the best thing is to go very early, before the tourist buses arrive, or in the late afternoon, when they have left. Hours: Keukenhof is open from 8:00 to 19:30.
