The study concludes that although most symptoms improve within a year, some cases may persist longer
The syndrome known as long Covid is capable of compromising the quality of life of people of all age groups for months after coronavirus infection. The study was published this February in the journal American Academy of Pediatrics analyzed the effects of this condition on children.
Conducted by researchers at Colorado Children’s Hospital in the United States, the article analyzed several studies on long Covid in children. The results indicate that tiredness and malaise are the most common symptoms of long Covid in children.
According to scientists, these signs may also be accompanied by weakness, headache, shortness of breath, difficulty concentrating or mental confusion, and drowsiness or mood changes.
Such symptoms are usually triggered by physical or cognitive activities. This condition has been called post-exertional malaise (PEM) and can affect children’s participation in school or recreational activities.
“Post-exertional malaise manifests as a worsening of the patient’s symptoms and function after exposure to physical, cognitive, emotional, or orthostatic stressors that were tolerated before the illness. PEM is an exacerbation or relapse of symptoms that occur following physical activity,” explain the study authors.
While most symptoms improve within a year, some cases may persist longer or cause lasting respiratory and cardiovascular problems. Researchers also consider the possibility of diagnosing diabetes and other autoimmune diseases after Covid infection, although this is rarer.
What is long Covid?
According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), long Covid refers to the persistence or onset of new physical symptoms up to three months after the initial infection. There is still no single cure for long Covid. Procedures can be defined according to each person’s individual needs.
