Expert comments on discharge and social security rights of those suffering from this disorder
According to INSS data, the number of sickness benefits for alcoholism grew by 19.5% in 2023. At least 4,300 benefits were granted to insured persons unable to work due to alcohol dependence.
According to the institute’s data, the number of services of this type gradually increased after the pandemic. In 2020, 3,100 requests were accepted. The following year the number rose to 3,300. In 2022 the number has grown to 3,600 concessions carried out.
Carla Benedetti, master’s and doctoral student in law at the PUC-SP, explains that sick pay is a right for those who suffer from this type of addiction, but there are trial steps for the benefit to be granted.
“It is important to understand that there are some requirements for this grant. It is necessary that there is a routine for this addiction that makes it impossible for the person to carry out his professional activity, which clearly constitutes a loss, ”he explains.
There are other benefits too
Depending on the case, the social security lawyer explains that other benefits apply in addition to the sickness benefit.
“The person affected by this disorder can, in some cases, apply for BPC (Continuous Payment Benefit), which serves the elderly and low-income people with disabilities, and also Disability Retirement, if the disorder persists, which in this case it is necessarily necessary to benefit from sickness benefit,” he comments.
Carla concludes with an important caveat about the data. “The consecutive increases raise a debate that goes beyond social security and must be interpreted by different sectors of society. The need for these types of benefits is likely to continue to grow.”
