Ship with more than 2 thousand passengers is stopped in Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, awaiting medical tests.
Mauritius, a country in the Indian Ocean, has denied a Norwegian cruise ship permission to dock in the capital Port Louis, due to fears of a potential cholera outbreak on board.
At least 15 people aboard Norwegian Dawn are in isolation due to suspected illness.
Mauritius authorities said the decision to block the ship was “taken to avoid health risks.”
Samples for testing were taken on Sunday (2/25). The results are expected to be published on Tuesday (27).
Passengers experienced mild symptoms of stomach problems during a trip to South Africa, a representative for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said.
A Dutch passenger on board told the BN DeStem newspaper that he had been informed by the ship’s captain that there might be a cholera epidemic on board.
In recent months, some areas of Africa have been hit by cholera epidemics. Zambia was the most affected country.
According to the United Nations, at least 188,000 people have been infected with cholera in seven African countries since January 2023. More than 3 thousand people died.
“The health and safety of passengers, as well as that of the country as a whole, is of the utmost importance to the authorities,” the Mauritius Port Authority said.
The ship arrived in Mauritius on Saturday evening, a day earlier than expected, after missing a scheduled stop on the island of Réunion (which is French territory).
There are 2,184 passengers and 1,026 crew members on board the ship. About 2,000 planned to disembark in Port Louis, while another 2,000 embarked in their place. This movement is now scheduled for Tuesday (27), a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said.
